Question about near-ending (spoilers)

Ok, you know how in the end when Alyx tells Barney she's gonna stay behind with you and distract the Combine (I think that's what she says)?

Distract the Combine? She has a chance to high-tail it outta there! The game made such a deal on you having to escape ASAP cuz the Citadel's gonna blow. The *only* reason I could see in her staying behind is if there's more Resistance members behind the train station, and even so they would've known about Barney's escape train and made it without last second Combine interference (as evident from the lack of Combine around the trains).

We would've gotten away without the big explosion catching up. Somebody explain this to me?! :|

If Gordon and Alyx went on Barney's train, the rebels on it would have a greater chance of experiencing Overwatch interference. It is possible that the Combine can track Anticitizen One's HEV signal (as Alyx mentions in unused dialogue that it was how she knew where to look for Gordon at the start of EP1). Therefore Barney's train would not be likely to face off with the Overwatch forces specifically after Gordon and Alyx.

The Combine, quite simply, dont give much of a damn about the resistance now. The reason the Combine are hounding you and Alyx is because Alyx has stolen something that could put the Combine plans for earth in the hands of the Resistance Scientists, and that could have lasting repercussions for the Combine. The advisors are sending huge numbers of troops to try and stop you.
If you were on the train with Barney, it is quite possible that the train would be destroyed and all the citizens killed, therefore Alyx decides to take another train.

Gordon and Alyx have a copy of the transmission the Combine were sending off. Throughout Episode 1 they have been stalking them both to regain/destroy the copy. With the Citadel in self desrtruct their attention is not focused on the fleeing citizens - they know they'll have a chance to take care of them later.

If Gordon and Alyx got onto that train the Combine would have hounded them the whole way.

Because you'd stopped the Strider, the remaining Combine forces and given Barney enough time to escape into the wastes.

Oh yea, I completely forgot about the copy of the transmission. Haha, when she said the transmission was going off I thought she was talking about the train, which was weird since the train was going super-fast.
