Quick 3ds Max / Photoshop Question

I've been following the tutorial in 3ds Max on how to create a Low-Poly character (the air pilot one). I finished that and moved on to Mapping a Character. I've been messing around with this for a while and understood it and I wanted to go as far as creating my own textures. Now I've used the Unwrap UVW tool to create the Pelt Mapping templates. I just dont understand how they work. It's just like a symetrical image that's all over the place. How would I color/texture it correctly?

I've attached the file so you can see the UVW template. This is a template of the pants (much much different from the shirt and helmet that I've done.)
