Reg hacks for the taskbar?

Are there any reg hacks or other windows hacks that will let me hide a task bar item that I don't want - or even better, move it to the system tray?

You mean the quick shortcuts on the left? Right click on the taskbar and uncheck 'lock taskbar' (or something, I have the dutch version here). Then you can delete, move or create the shortcuts.

No no no, I mean the applications themselves.

No, if an Application appears on the taskbar that is an application setting that the developer of the application controls. You can group them to save space etc...
