actually this is quite interesting/bizarre/omg teh aliens are cumming!


One of the most bizarre weather patterns in the solar system has been photographed at Saturn, where astronomers have spotted a huge, six-sided feature circling the north pole.

Rather than the normally sinuous cloud structures seen on all planets that have atmospheres, this thing is a hexagon.

The straight sides of the hexagon are each about 13,800 kilometers long. The entire structure rotates with a period of 10h 39m 24s, the same period as that of the planet's radio emissions, which is assumed to be equal to the period of rotation of Saturn's interior. The hexagonal feature does not shift in longitude like the other clouds in the visible atmosphere.

The pattern's origin is a matter of much speculation. Most astronomers seem to favor some sort of standing-wave pattern in the atmosphere; but the hexagon might be a novel sort of aurora. More extreme speculation has Saturn's radio emissions emanating from the hexagon (something we can see and which has the right rotation period) rather than from the planet's interior (something we cannot see).

It looks like every moth it's an end of the world scenario, meteorites, aliens, hexagonal clouds, black holes, orange snow. Yet we're still here, I'm damn dissapointed.:hmph:

There are so many aspects to physical proccesses we do not understand.
 
wow. I would have to agree with the standing wave hypothesis. 2 dimensional standing waves in simple fluids can create geometric figures like squares and hexagons. The question is, what is causing the waves? Since it is emitting radio frequencies, and is at the poles, I suspect some kind of magnetic force is at work. Perhaps the planet's magnetic field fluctuates in that one area just enough to produce a standing wave pattern in ionized particles of gas in the atmosphere. Ionized particles might be tugged back and forth in this magnetic storm, and an oscillating field in that area would create a radio signal, it would also create a standing wave pattern of positively/negatively charged particles.

That is just my guess, though.

They have a physical affect but they don't exist, go figure :laugh:

edit: Some large hurricanes contain the same geometry in the eye at times.
