I thought that headcrabs and stuff like that are from Xen - at least they arrived with the rest of the Xen in HL 1, so how come through HL2 you get shells landing that open containing lots of them? Where are they coming from?

Just curious ;)

Okay, so the Combine came to Earth after the headcrabs. They found a Gonarch (HUGE momma headcrab), and amputated it's womb-sac-thing. The little baby headcrabs that plopped out were stuffed into the black shells you see, and launched from a large, maybe-unseen (the device in Lost Coast might have been one) artillery piece.

The Combine launch these shells into rebel hidey-holes, because zombies will attack rebels just as easily as they'll attack the Combine. Also, rebels whose stations have been raided can don their civvy-jumpsuits and mingle with society. Zombies... not so much.

Yep the cannon in Lost Coast is launching headcrab rockets...

And I'll tell ya, I just got through the part where you are going through the rebel outposts and you have to deal with the headcrab shells scared the crap out of me!

One thing I've always pondered about those shells is that since the impact seems to be quite hard and also instant shouldn't the inertial force make a nice headcrab pudding inside the rocket every time one of those hits the ground?

Pfft, didn't you know that inside is no gravity? They just bob around a bit.

Actually, I wondered the same exact thing.

Those things are tough. They can fall down from a 30-metre high building without any damage. :p

The world was ravaged by portal storms, thus most of it is a wasteland and serves as a breeding ground and new home for all manner of Xen aliens.

A direct impact on hard ground without buffer.

"Jumping from high ledges without anticipation of fatal impact is commonly known to be an unwise activity and is not recommended by the legal team of halflife2.net"
