wouldnt it be better for Valve to scrap steam for HL2 and just release the game asap through retail outlets.
People would still buy it leaked or not. They arent going to lose out from sales from this. Ok maybe licensing and other companies may choose to use their ideas or not license the technology but a few months isnt going to change this now. But it would be better to be first out the door than wait for someone to use this code constructively. The retail sales will be huge and will help them with damage control. By xmas who knows they might even lose this option.
Rewriting the code to make it secure would be a waste now. People will always cheat wether they have the source code or not. Warez has been released for every game without ever having the source code so that is not a factor. This kind of thing doesnt stop anybody.
They could even declare it open source, move on and start writing HL3 as they doing. They could still come up smelling of roses unless of course they continue to panic and dwell on what has happened.
