Simple question about internet activation.....

A freind of mine has dial-up internet so would I have to bring my comp to their house then create a new connection with their account? OR could I just bring the game over there, create a steam account using their comp and then register cd-key without installing the game?

You will need to take your computer over, connect to the internet using their line, then auth the game.

You cannot auth the game on any other computer than the one the game will be installed and played on.

Steam needs to be activated on the computer you plan on playing the game with.

How would your computer at home know if you activated it or not?

btw, if you both have ethernet adapters, you could just network to eachother and have him share out his dial up internet access (easy in XP).

You cannot auth the game on any other computer than the one the game will be installed and played on.

That sounds a little missleading. You can auth it on as many computers as you want. But it does have to be authed on whatever computers you play it on.

Yes your quite right, i should have just said you cant auth it on one pc and play it on another which hasnt been online to auth as well.

edit:Q above^^ no you can just go online with their account to sign up and auth steam, you will not have to create a seperate net account afaik.

Just ONE more question(3 part question).

a)So I can download steam to a freinds comp and register the cd-key that way?

b)Won't steam be required on the comp where hl2 is being played?

c)Do I need to download steam before I can activate the cd-key or do I just need to sign up for a steam account?

B) YES

C) YES you will have to dl steam and sign up for a new account with it.

Once you have the new account set up you will be given the option to 'Register A Game I Already Own' do this and enter the CD Key that you get with your retail game, Steam will then activate your games for you, and then you can unplug your pc from your friends phone line and take it home. Job done.
