OK, I know there are some MOD idea threads out there, but I thought I'd focus just on non-modded single player ideas for those of us who like to map, but aren't into coding. I'm sure lots of you had map ideas for HL1 that you never got around to but might actually finish for HL2.
Well, I had several plans for making single player add-ons for HL1, some of which I started on and never finished. The prospect of doing them in HL2 is very tempting but I doubt I'll have the time as I'm currently working on my Ph.D.
Anyway, here are my stories that never saw the light of day:
1) "Crosses to Bear": A return to Black Mesa. The portal is still open and the G-Man wants you to clean-up. It starts with you sneaking into an abandoned church in the dead of night. You find coffins in the surounding graveyard containing dead scientists (and the occasional zombie). Suddenly you are jumped by assasins and a firefight ensues in the church. You eventually find a button hidden in the pulpit, pushing it causes the alter to fold back revealing a passage into the depths of the earth. You sneak through flooded tunnels leading to new (and familiar) areas of the Black Mesa compound. It appears the complex is not completely abandoned and some 'science' is still going on. You retrace your steps through BM eventually ending up at the test chamber, where the final battle (with Nihalanth?) takes place.
- I finished the first map for this. The fight in the church and surrounding graveyard was quite nice - stained glass everywhere (I had some truly beautiful textures). The alter was pretty cool as well (the steps folded back and it swung open). I also planned to have one sequence where a transporter malfunction sends a chuck of Black Mesa (ie 2 floors containing about 5 or 6 rooms) to Xen with you on board.
2) "MAX": A short add-on with a few twists. It appears that not all the aliens were exterminated. A number of captured aliens are being housed and studied in a small research building. A group of terrorists known as MAX ("Mothers Against Xen") has broken into the facility and is threatening to release the critters into the nearby suburbs. You must infiltrate the facility and stop MAX (the 'assasins' from HL). As you might guess, some aliens do escape and you end up fighting house to house, ducking behind backyard barbeques, etc (the Apache helecopter also plays prominently)
3) "Clonetech": A fun little 'scientist killing' level. It appears that the scientists have there own facility, called Clonetech, where they are performing hideous experiments on marines. The G-Man sends you in to stop this. As you might expect, you learn a few secrets along the way. What exactly are those scientists eating in the cafeteria and why are there are only 4 types of scientists? You guessed it, they are clonning their own army! You also find out something about yourself - the ending has you falling into a room of Gordon Freemans!! A scientist in the corner of the room is frantically pounding on a computer labelled "Gordon AI" (the mappers out there will get this one).
I doubt I'll ever do these, so I'll let my babies go. If anyone uses these ideas please let me know (and acknowledgements are also appreciated
).
