I was having a problem where Half-Life 2 was re-validating its files almost every time I tried to run it. I know other people have been experiencing this as well.

This is a pretty simple solution, but it worked for me. If you've been having the same problem, hopefully it will work for you.

All you need to do is make sure you right-click on the Steam system tray icon and exit Steam properly BEFORE you shut down your computer. The re-validation problem seems to occur after Steam hasn't been shut down properly and you have had to select "end task" in order to close it.

If this turns out to be useful for other people, perhaps it should be stickied.

That might just be it. Will try today.

Yep i always click end task, thanx for info.
it works now. cheers.

Well i've also had lots of trouble with validating.......

Thinking about it, could it be from running adaware? Getting rid of cookies and the like may be deleting some important stuff for HL......
Are you guys having the same trouble using a similar program?

**EDIT: Nope that isnt the solution. Just clicked on HL and guess what, another 5 mins validating. I'll go with the disconnect idea.**

i just make sure i am not connected to the internet when i boot up (unplug my cable modem). seems to work fine.

Nope, sometimes when I "end task" it doesn't validate again and sometimes it does.

Fixed my problem, actually figured this out on my own.

Why is it validating? because it thinks it is broken.
Why is it thinking it is broken? becasue it was shutdown improperly.
(and then think, hey, like windows!)
