In the past month or so, a micronesian chick sharing my last name (Viti) sent me a friend request. I thought nothing more than "oh lol, a foreigner who thinks its peculiar that we share the same surname", and added. She left a message on my wall that same day saying she'd like to get to know me better, which I ignored.

Now, just today she sent me a chat message, which I also ignored. Until she sent another that started asking about my father, who passed when I was 5. At this point a demented little lightbulb went off in my head, as I just realized that my dad spent a good 15-20 years in Micronesia after graduating college.

I started replying with simple one sentence answers to her questions, about my dad, about where I live, etc etc, which she quite creepily knows way too much about, until I reply "so i'm under the assumption at this point that we share the same father...". She tells me that she's actually my niece, and that i've got a 40 year old brother and sister in Micronesia. She just mentioned that she got all this info about us from a lawyer who contacted the family after my father passed away.

So right now I don't know whether to believe this chick or not, because while it seems like a legit facebook page, and it's not the sort of thing one would really bullshit about, a lot of this info about me, my dad, my mom, etc etc that she seems to already know, can actually be found on the internet through a bit of sleuthing, as his death was pretty well publicized (locally at least). He was also a pretty well known photographer, who apparently has a bunch of pictures on display at the Smithsonian (this is hearsay though...), so there is info about him out there... On the other hand though, the man did spend a good third of his life in micronesia....

Still chatting with her. Bricks are tentatively being shat

So nothing has actually happened.

She hasn't asked for money or anything like that, so why worry until that happens?

You wouldn't be kinda shocked to hear about a long lost sibling?

Wait, your last name is Viti too? Uh......

It was disturbing enough to think that my dad had a family in another country and dug out on them. It's even more disturbing to think that he might have done so with another species...

I didn't mean it like that, but your thread kind of seemed like a "is she fake or real omg halp" thing. It is really crazy if true, of course.

Maybe I'm just impatient because I feel like you jumped the gun on making the thread before you really found out who she was and what she was trying to do.

Yeah, not so much an advice thread. I was just pretty shocked and had to alert somebody.

She says she wants to meet up. Doesn't sound like she wants any money or anything. She said she was going to log off to go upload a photo of her mom (my sister) and my dad together, so the tip of the brick is just about passed the doo doo hole at this point...

As long as she doesn't ask for money or a place to stay or anything I don't see the problem. Sounds interesting.

I say jump the gun here, and ask her for money.

As long as she doesn't ask for money or a place to stay or anything

Well if she asks for a place to stay that wouldn't be much of a problem. Just put her in your pocket or something.

why dont you investigate them too? that way you can be sure and will not end up in a bathub whit limbs and organs lost

"hey mom did dad have another family that I dont know about?"

seems to be the easiest solution

I read the title and immediately thought "Yes, and?"

But that's somewhat strange.

That's like one of those mass-production fantasy books where the protagonist finds out that his long-gone father has another family in another magical world and he goes and has wacky adventures, saves the otherworld, and gets laid a lot.

Ask her if she can do magic.

Ask these questions first though:
  1. Is this a lawyer or person identifier? If it was a lawyer I'm sure that the lawyer would call you instead of this girl on Facebook. Asking certain details as well can be used as a form of identity theft (but you already did that).
  2. Ask relatives about this. Like "how come you didn't tell me Claire was my sister"?
  3. Bring friends along to avoid a CSI episode.
  4. Finally ask her like numbers said if she can do magic. Maybe she can turn into a Panther, yiff, yiff!

So I went ahead and asked my mom about it. At firs she denied it, but eventually she fessed up and said my dad had another family while he was living in Micronesia. The story goes that while he was doing dive tours in Micronesia, he met a chick and had twins with her. He then moved an island or two over and took her with him, but she got homesick and decided to go back to her home island. The relationship kind of fell apart after that, and when he decided he was going to move back to the US, she refused and said she'd just stay in Micronesia with the kids, so he bought them a plot of farmland and moved to Hawaii.

Everything she says seem to correspond with what the girl, who is apparently my niece, has told me so far. My dad's sister has also corroborated the story. My mom also went ahead and contacted the lawyer who handled my dad's death about the matter, and she said that while an investigator did go out and find the family after the death, they signed paperwork stating they wanted nothing to do with the case, and thus the will, at the time. Apparently they're still legally entitled to something though.

(hopefully none of them ever read that last bit)

soooooooo YOU HAVE A HOLIDAY HOUSE IN MICRONESIA?!??!?!?!

also thats kinda cool I guess. Since you dad died when you were young it's like you get to know him a bit better all of a sudden.

Wow, interesting. Good that it's legit. Makes you wonder how many people have half-siblings out there they don't know about. I know another guy here who just met his grandfather's "other family" at his funeral.

Your new relatives seem cool though... lots of folks would probably be all over free money.
