After spending some quality time with the UE3 tools, I thought I'd write a little rant in the form of an open letter.

Have you thought about emailing Valve? There is little chance they will see it otherwise.

I was merely venting my spleen. I don't expect for one second that Valve will see it.

Mainly because I wouldn't presume to speak for everyone - I'm sure there's people that will disagree.

I should clarify my comment about command-line tools. The ones released as part of the SDK, there's no benefit to them being CLI-based. Obviously, there's going to be CLI tools that are useful and beneficial (I've used a few, and I still drop to a DOS box sometimes for complex file operations)

it seems that (if there isn't already) it would be easy to make a software package that did some of that stuff for you (in the valve way of doing things)

There was someone that was working on his own integrated editor for HL2/Source. He got bought out by person(s) unknown.

heh, that would be even better than what I was thinking about. I was thinking just along the lines of something that could take a texture tga, png, psd whatever and output all the right files and put them in the right places.

Oh, there's third-party tools. My point is that all this stuff should be built into the editor. It'd make the workflow infinitely better.

Pi Mu Rho, if you don't send it to Valve, I will.

Why put up this big rant, when Valve isn't going to see it?

That's one of the things I was dreading when deciding to learn Hammer, coming from years of experience with UEd. Do you know of any good references that explain the nuances of getting custom content into Hammer?

Trial and error? That's how I picked it up.

someone probably did. I've no idea where, though. You're probably best off starting with the third-party tools.

Try searching for some GUI's to do all the work for you. Although, when Valve update Steam sometimes it breaks the programs.
