Hey guys,

Wandering streets/suburbs of City 17, I have noticed that many cars there VERY CLOSELY resemble some Russian cars from Soviet Era.

So, would you like me to compile a list of the real prototypes, coupled with screenshots, to see which model inspired that particular piece of metal you just pushed flying with your grav gun? ;)

I don't really want the list, but I too noticed they're mostly russian cars.. or look-a-likes atleast.

very early in the game you find some posters and stuff that is written in russian with all those funky letters n' stuff...(and no I'm not talking about the combine posters)

Well, guys...City 17 is where? Yes, eastern europe! Now, what were many countries in eastern Europe formerly a part of?

Just FYI, those funky letters are called Cyrillics. Used in Russia, Belorussia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, and, I believe, Serbia, though I am not really sure about the last one.

And yes, those walls in the beginning of the game look like parts from Moscow Theatre Performance posters, it mentions one Moscow Theater, although those are only parts of the poster, so it does not make too much sense. I already posted about that one: http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=40408&page=2&pp=15&highlight=Meyerhold

Warsaw pact. If you imply they were parts of Soviet Union, you are wrong. While heavily influenced and sometimes invaded (Prague, 1968) , Soviet Union never imposed language or alphabet on those countries.

I was actually referring to the cars. Their close ties to the Soviet Union through the Warsaw Pact (if I'm not mistaken) had some economic impact, which would explain all the Russian cars. THAT'S what I was implying.

You poor people, seeing those cars in the game only. I've actually driven one of them :p.

Oh, sorry about that. Sure, you are right. Actually, I found one of the cars to be look-alike of Traband, cheapest car in DDR (Deutch Democratic Republic) - East Germany, that is, socialist before the Fall of The Berlin Wall.

Anyways, I still have to inspect all the HL2 cars carefully before posting that list, maybe I will ask for help from other Russian HalfLIfe2.NET members :) BTW, guys, if you are there, lemme know :)

Cool beans, dude. I look forward to the list.

All right, I will equal that ;). My first car was VAZ 2101 "Zhiguli" aka "Kopeika"(http://autovaz.tlt***/authors/2101/car.jpg), 1978, as old as I am! Worked out pretty well actually, although sometimes I wished for Gravity Gun, especially when the icing on the slope and your current tires are not exactly "compatible' :D

Something interesting relating to this. Around City 17 you can find some human tech such as crashed BRDM's, maybe some BMP's (my friend said he found a rusted one. I think he may have found the same Russian BRDM that I did though)

Leftover rubble from the 7 hour war, anyone?

Well, actually Zhiguli was a fine car. The quality of servicing, gas, tyres and other stuff you could get was another question. But the good thing about Soviet cars is, they work 20 years later.

Actually, Solver, they rust together and end up in a nice brownish little pile with all the other scrap man creates. Russian cars are SHIT. They're made to be robust and work, obviously, but once the rust is getting the overhand it can break any time while driving, which isn't exactly your ideal driver situation.

yeah i think it would be cool to know which cars inspired the models in the game...especially since i never been to Russia and since those models are something i don't see every day :D

I was born in Russian, so I know the cars ... the Volga, the east-Germany Trabant, and the truck too.

They required more care, but I agree, the winter with salt on the road was a killa for the body.:bonce:

Still, some russian cars are better than the other. ;) Especially the older ones... The quality seems to have deteriorated since 1980's or so.

Actually I still see enough Russian cars manufactured in the 1980s in the streets every day. Not as many now as ten years ago, but quite enough. Though in the last years before the USSR collapsed, problems indeed started appearing.
