the original series was my/north america's first exposure to anime. I thought it was weird looking what with their giant eyes and crazy hairstyles and none of it made any sense but hey it had spaceships in it so I watched anyways

Looks okay-ish maybe possibly. I'm always skeptical about these high budget japanese live action remakes because they seem to have a habit of producing wonderful trailers that the films don't deliver on. Casshern, for example. Amazing trailer for what turned out to be a bloated, plodding, mediocre CGI-fest.

Anyway, I'm not familiar with the source material for this one, so hey. Most of the anime I remember from my childhood involved magical girls or something.
