Steam + 28.8k = screwed (1500 minutes left)

So....

• I had a friend download all steam-related stuff & update it yesterday (I'm on 28.8k).
• I signed up for a steam account 3 days ago.
• I restart my steam at 12:00.
• The game unlocks after about a 6MB transfer (according to my firewall).
• I go to launch the game in offline mode & it refuses.
• I go online and discover that it won't work without an update.
• I wait around for 10 minutes for the HL2 update to start (for some reason steam is still constantly downloading files, even though It's downloaded over 40 MB tonight).
• The update finally starts and I see 1500 minutes (25 hours) left on downloading the update. (150MB?)

I thought that I saw emails saying it wouldn't require a huge download to unlock & start playing. Lets just say I'm more than a little pissed off...and I'm trying to stay calm.
