Steam From My Ears!!!!!!!!!! Plz Hlp

I just bought hl2 game of the year edition from ebgames yesterday. I got home and tried to install hl:source, counter strice:source, hl2 and hl2-dm. But when I click on hl2, STEAM pops up and starts "updating system platform" on a freaking 56k modem (i just moved to North carolina ;( ;( ;( ), so ok, whatever... why can't I simply play the game I paid $41.99 for? I have the cd key, basically, i want to know: do I need to be connected to the internet EVERY time I want to launch half life 2???? please help;( WTF?

All these updates are patches for Steam and Half Life 2, Theyll stop eventually.
There is an offline mode, you cant use it if the updates are going though.

If you attempted to even play Halflife 2 before the patches came out, you'd see a LOT of stuttering and near-unplayable gameplay. Be thankful.

If itll take you hours on end I think you can install steam with your username, then install hl2 with out being connected to the net, worked for me first time but I got the stutter problem.
