Steam is not working

I have installed HL2 demo and as I run the Steam.exe it shows a window with updating and initializing messages. Some time after the windows goes and nothing happens. Some times an icon appears in systray but it also goes in 2-5 seconds and nothing happens on double clicking it. Can anybody help?

Sounds like a corrupt installation. Uninstall Steam and delete any left over folders/files from your Program Files>Steam folder.

Download the Steam client from www.steampowered.com (about 600K) and install, making sure it updates to the latest platform files. Once you've logged into your account, then try re-installing the demo...it may work?

I'm guessing that you're not on broadband either - if so, your connection to the Internet could be timing out, thus preventing Steam from updating properly.

The other option is to try and play offline (ie disconnect your modem from the phone cable) and see if it will start in Offline mode.
