Started Steam and it said "encrypting halflife 2" - what does that mean?

perhaps it encrypted a part of the whole .. which files are still encrypted and which aren´t? Somebody more information?

Perhaps they will encrypt the whole game before the official retail release and will only enable the starter at the end??

CSS uses some Half Life 2 files I think so when CSS updates it has to decrypt your hl2 gcf files and update then encrypt them again. I've seen the window come up saying Decrypting Half Life 2 files when a CSS update is out so I assume what you saw is what happens after the update is complete.

I don't think Valve trusts you, so they double encrypted it.

IIRC, the latest preload contained the HL2 maps, so maybe it's encryppin those maps.

it has to deencrypt..to put the new files in..the probably re encrypts them UBER like...so if any ground has been made on the unencryption....it takes down a whole new road.!

A couple of days go when I started up steam it said "Unlocking Half-Life 2 files" I was really excited, but then nothing happened.

I assume it sends them over already encrypted, otherwise their fantastic protection system would be pretty easy to crack :)

Maybe it's just a clever way of getting us all hyped up about the game. Every so often it says 'Encrypting HL2 files' or 'Please wait - admiring HL2 GCF's, or 'Thinking about letting you have HL2 early', just to keep us all awake here.
