Steam servers too busy, with a twist.

I am trying to play HL2 episode 1, but it is stuck at 93% updating and keeps telling me that servers are two busy.

The twist is that just yesterday I was playing the game from the beginning after finishing all the initial updates.

I checked I did not see any updates listed and anyway, I disable updating for this very reason, but it's not like steam will ever do what it should.

The questions are simple, how and why did this happen, how can I fix it and play again, how can I prevent it from happening again (not just telling it not to update, I mean a real hard prevention method), and how can I configure stem to run in offline mode, like I don't have the Internet or if my Internet goes down.

My Internet did go down temporarily yesterday, could that have caused problems?

I think it may be this http://www.steampowered.com/?area=news update listed in news.

Is there a way to stop the updating and play as is. Simply pausing the update does not help as it just restarts the update and sets to automatically update the game.

How stupid is to disable the game while updating. Download and install when free, and don't leave the program useless.

I freaking hate Steam, I really do.
