Steam with mods

I managed to play half life for the first time through steam and loved it. I would like to try some mods not included such as dod. Is there any way to do this without actually buying the game?

You need to dance a light tango, while your eating a roasted cat, then you dance a light tango again mixed with some samba, take a rose and look at it for four hours and then do the limbo !
then it might work donno man tried my best tho

im pretty sure (read this same topic somewhere) that u need to add the Dod folder in the steam folder where the others are. Then it will show up.

Not totally sure though :x

how can i install it if i dont have the retail version of halflife, just steam?
