yea yea it been said but, in the strider vid, when it shoots the bridge and the crouches lower, do u think that it walked beacuse

a: it wasted too much time shooting the bridge and had work to do

b: shot the bridge for the sake of it

c: was drunk

and beofe it crouched it shot the bridge again, but it was aiming for the swinging sign.... trying to get more stuff out of the way.

and lastly...do u think the ai has a morale meter? like of a bunch of rebels are getting there ass pounded, would they run away? would a strider blow up every explodible barrel just to frighten the rebel ai and have them run away while getting shot up

i think the strider got sick of answering the same question over and over again and just started blowing shit up. :|

Thats what I would do. :dozey:

Pretending for the moment that the strider is an intelligent creature (or at least under the control of intelligent creatures) and not a program in a video game, I'd say this happened:

1) it wanted to chase the humans
2) it realized the bridge was in the way
3) it tried to blast the bridge to pieces
4) it realized the bridge wasn't destroyed
5) it realized the humans were getting away
6) it figured out that if it did a limbo walk it could get under the bridge
7) it did so

Described that way, it doesn't sound too magical, right? Same kind of thought process we might use, and not that hard to program.

You must have tried to program it and succeeded then, right? :naughty:

The Strider AI is perhaps the best thing I've seen in Half-Life 2. It ducks under bridges, kicks cars out of the way, carefully moves over obstacles, I'm buying the game for that alone.

I think GorgeousOrifice figured out exactly what the Strider was doing.

Oh, of course. I actually work for Valve. I also coded the manhacks, the strider's gun, and did the Manipulator with a broken keyboard and a greenscreen monitor. :D

Seriously, I meant "not that hard" as opposed to coding a full AI system. As long as the program APPEARS to act intelligently, it doesn't matter how advanced the guts are. Valve is able to create a very convincing illusion of intelligence with a pretty simple hint/object system (which is a pretty noteworthy achievement in and of itself). Not saying I could do it -- the most I ever did was write a checkers program that could beat me, and I suck at checkers -- just saying that someone who knew what they were doing could pull it off, and this is how.

Well you know, when I was young we had to programme in binary code all the time. Of course we couldn't afford the 1s, we had to only use 0s. Well, the zero didn't work on my keyboard so I had to use the letter O.

Lol.... :|

I had a microscope, a hard drive platter, and a bar magnet. I arranged the inodes by hand.

I founded IBM with nothing but a pencil sharpener, a car battery and a calculator.

The Strider is thinking "hmm...is that a coin on the floor? Let me have a closer look WHOA! I just happened to have walked under the bridge...fancy that...ooh, humans *prod*"

or maybe he was following his programming which was leading him to try and impress a certain lady strider :naughty:

Or maybe he was squatting to drop a deuce, but the guys with guns interrupted him and he got upset,as any of us would in a position like that ;)

What a thread..

Damn i think it was c, drunk

You guys are over-estimating the AI way too much. The Strider was scripted to shoot the bridge.

The strider was scripted to shoot the bridge but it wasn't expected to walk under it

Like, first it walked under it after it realized it couldn't blow it up. then Valve decided it can blow it up, just not that much.
