I'm sorry if a thread for this topic already exists--a rudimentary forum search didn't lead to any satisfactory results.

Is there any way to stop HL2 from accessing the sounds from the hard-drive? I know Maldo's .cfgs allow you to preload the sounds so the stutter disappears, but is there any specific command in the console to disable Half Life 2 from accessing the hard drive for sounds altogether?

Turning the volume off obviously still loads sounds. (Though I still tried it. Call me a noob. Go ahead.) :)

Noob.
lol :p

Umm... The only way I would be able to think of to preload the sound would be using the "play" command to play the sound after setting the volume to zero (using "volume 0").
But I am so not going to copy and paste every possible sound from the gcf files and precache them :p

Yeah, but that'd still access the hard drive, right? That's more or less the same as Maldo's .cfg fix.

Thanks, anyway!

Well, if you could find a way to make the game play sounds that aren't in the GCF files and neither in the game folders, you'd be able to make them play from a CD or DVD.

But you can't just stop Half Life 2 from loading sounds altogether? I read somewhere that editing all sound cues from the maps is one way of going about it--but that'd take ages!

Ah, found it:
sv_precachesound
Usage: sv_precachesound <name> [ preload ]

Add sound to precache list.

But the problem is that it may have been deleted because you could change models using the sv_precachemodel command. So if it's gone, see if you can find sv_precachegeneric.

Thanks. I'm working on it. But now I have another problem: I can load the game fine, and I can load my savegame fine, but if I want to reload after loading that savegame, or if the game loads further data (during the black LOADING box), the game crashes to desktop. :(

I tried starting a new chapter after rebooting and running hl2, and that works fine as well. But after exiting the trainyard on the next LOADING box the game quits again.

Well, you could try typing in the console:
map
Normally, it should then display a list off all the maps in the game. Maybe if you change to the map manually you might be able to continue.

Increasing the heapsize solved the map loading problem--although the game ran fine earlier with a 500 megs heapsize. :)
