Stuck In A Stupid Place

Ok. Doing the bit with the sewers right near the start of the game......as you go through them you go past the first checkpoint where there is an alien that recharges your suit a bit, then through some more tunnels. There is a bit where loads of stuff explodes in the water when you jump in then you come out into an open area. There is a large bridge which a few guards run onto, I blew them up as at the base of the bridge was several explodable drums. My problem is I think I have to get onto the raised section that runs round the edge of where I am now but cant figure out how..... any help? (I tried piling up a load of boxes and car tyres I found lying around but it just isnt quite high enough).

Sounds like the same place I was in for about 30 mins .... if so, behind the destroyed bridge are some low archways. The far right one is blocked by a few barrels that you can push.....I was building towers out scrap also ......
