Help! Stuck in HL2?

Are you stuck in HL2, or any other game for that matter? Don't know where to go next? A part of the game that everyone else seemed to figure out except you? Google for a F**king walkthrough!!!! You will save yourself loads of time trying to explain where you are- "umm, I'm at the place with a wall, and that guy is shooting me. Y' know?"- and then waiting for ages for a reply. And when someone finally understands where you are, you will have to ask them questions on their answer, untill you both realise you aren't even talking about the same game! Once you finally get past the part you couldn't before, you will probably be back in 10 minutes because you need help on the next bit again.

Whew! Sorry for the rant, but why do you think it is that a lot of people take the long way to finding a solution to their gaming progress problems? Having the entire walkthrough for a game, at your fingertips whenever you want, surely is much more helpfull and instant than asking for help on a forum. If you want to just get help on that part, and try to do the rest of the game on your own, then just read that part of the guide. Walkthroughs are not hard to find.

Any ideas on why people persist in making it hard on themselves?

Ppl want to accomplish something without cheating

They need help. Instead of browsing the interweb for solutions they simply want to interact with other human beings and recieve an answer from us friendly forumites. Why is that wrong?

Azner- By asking for a solution on a forum, they are getting the same info they would on a walkthrough, but in a slower and much more frustrating way. A walkthrough isn't a cheat, it is a guide for when you get lost / stuck. So I don't understand why you say they don't want to cheat. What does cheating have to do with a walkthrough, especially when they are asking for the information? They are still being told where to go / what to do either way.

Xombine- I didn't say it was wrong, just stupid and inefficient.

Shodan- ???

I usually do neither, I will literally search and search for hours if I get stuck in a puzzle, or I will sit and fight for hours if I get stuck on a boss.

One time, in Commandos 3 I just sat there staring at the screen for 2 hours straight, trying to figure out how to get past this part, and with ALOT of trial and error, I finally got past it.

The only reason I'd read a walkthrough is to see how their techniques differ from mine, and if I play another similar game, I'll try that technique (see, it's not cheating if the walkthrough is for a different game!)

I like your attitude! I try for ages too, but If I get really stuck, there is a point when I just say- "arrgghhh! I just want to get to the next bit!"

Nice avatar too.

Sparda- Thanks! I didn't know that Australians had opinions!

Arrgh anyways i liked the way HL1 had its puzzles and i wanted to try it my own WITHOUT ANY WALKTHROUGHS as i know i can do it myself

Well i only use walkthoughs the second time i play a game, just to see if i missed anything.

Sparda I'm the same way, I don't like to use walkthroughs the first time.
Half Life 2 didn't have any puzzles that were hard enough that you had to ask questions...My biggest problem was after your get to the city square for the first time(after that dick makes you pick up the can and you throw it at him and run) I couldn't figure out where to go, i was trying to get threw those blue force field thingys for 30 minutes before i started to look for another path lol...good times...

hi, I'm stuck on the bit where you see the gman and you get off a train

i cant get thru the turnstile

can sum1 help lol

If people want to ask on the forums for help, let them.

It's doing no harm.

I like reading walkthroughs for games I've completed, to see if the author suggests doing anything differently from how I did it.

These days, I do sometimes check an online walkthrough if I'm stuck, I have to admit, but it's not often that I do. Usually, I get stuck (happens a fair amount of times), and then I search, try again, etc. Then I only check a walkthrough if it becomes too frustrating, like, spending an hour (literally) going in circles somewhere. Then it's frustrating, immersion-breaking and not remotely fun to me anymore, so I check a walkthrough to proceed. Most of the time, though, I manage to find a way after some time...

HL2, I didn't get stuck much. Just a few places, maybe some three, and I found the right way after not too much time, and without any frustration - just tried to "think like Freeman". HL1, on the contrary, I got stuck in a lot... and spent a crapload of time in some places. This is actually the main reason why my memories of my first HL1 playthrough aren't all great, I was getting stuck to the point of frustration to much. The second playthrough was better, didn't get stuck, but then I remember encountering some nasty bugs, like the "We've got hostiles" elevator-crush bug, and some clipping issues in Xen, like me being stuck in terrain. My third playthrough was, finally, great, as well as all subsequent ones.

Your name is hippicritical!

You are supposed to be the Solver!!!

LOL took me 1 hour to find where to go!!!:(

But if people want help give it to them if you can, don't say "google is your friend"

If your annoyed by them, don't answer them...just that simple..
Agreed, they want help not people calling them idiots for asking for help.

I never read a walkthrough until I finished the entire game.

However, I am sorry about I have to read the walkthrough of HL2 when I am yet to finish the game since I get stuck inside the citadel. However, I found out , at last, that it is a bug of the game. The bug blocks me from processing. Damn Valve!

I was pissing my self laughing after reading these posts, they prove my point perfectly:

First one

and just a couple of days later:

Second one

All of that confusion and wasted time, just to get to the next part, and get stuck again. Now before you say "he wanted to do it for himself"- if he did, he wouldn't have asked for the answer / a hint on a forum. He even says in the second one:

" *I ask questions cause I need just a hint on how to break a stalemate...but not so much to ruin the game experience."

Now unless someone is really stupid, they would just read up to the point they are stuck in a walkthrough, get the help / hint they needed, and then put it away again. Nothing is "ruined" for them. It doesn't make any sense to me to go through this long and slow process of asking on a forum, then waiting for replies. Take control of your own lives FFS, and don't put how long it takes you to get through the game in the hands of some forum.

Sorry use you as an example, Dehurec- no personal insult's were intended. You were just the first example I came across.

Shasta you have a good point, but if they ask on a forum and have to wait it's there problem, plus good walkthroghs are hard to come by.

What im about to say is well.... oh F it, you are not in charge hear, so stop telling people they can't ask for help hear, i know it can piss people of but most of them are n00bs that just want help, you can't have a go at them because you once was a n00b.

Well, I'm not trying to tell anyone what to do, I'm just pointing out how stupid it is. It doesn't even annoy me when they post there "help! im stuck at..." threads. I just find it funny that they post them at all, when there is a much better, easier, and less time consuming alternative. That's all. I started this thread to find out if anyone else felt this way.

And I don't know where you look for walkthoughs, but I have no trouble finding good ones. Gamefaqs.com seems to have all anyone would need, but even google will find you something usefull. The only time it is hard to find a walkthrough, is when the game is brand spanking new, or it is a 3rd party mod, or just an obscure game hardly anyone has heard of.
