Stuck in Water Hazard

Ok, I opened the gates and went through what looks like a huge segmented tunnel (After the part where you get the revolver), but I am completely lost now and a helicopter keeps killing me. It seems like there is this area with lots of debris, but I cant get around it or shoot down the gunship. (Althought I havent had much time to look - I die fairly soon when I start slowing down)

(if i do: As you go in, turn right [you'l see 2 combine above you] turn right again and you'l see a tunnel [the same one the guy talked to you through]) turn left once in tunnel)

this the first gunship you've come across?

if so just go the the left of the debris field(hint: theres a barnacle thing there) if you go up the stairs there, there is a door hidden by loads of barrels, open that and you should be on your way
