This also gives me a chance to ask how I know if my HL2 has been updated as i don't remember steam ever updating itself.

No, actually I had no problems BEFORE the patch, now with the patch I have a lot of problems.

When people say "sound stuttering", do they mean that only the sound stutters?
Because for me everything stutters, when certain sounds are loaded... it seems.

stuttering reduced to almost nothing with the patch, before it some areas were getting close to unplayable for me

It stutters a lot for me on High texture detail, so I'm forced to use Medium. I think it has more to do with lack of RAM than a bug in the game, I only have 512mb.
