Ok, I am "Getting" This game soon, and I was wondering a few things:

1) This was created at the same time/by the same people who created the best game ever - Deus Ex 1, Is this game similar to Deus Ex? (Gameplay/Graphical)

2) Do I need to beat System Shock 1 to get the storyline of this game?

3) Does the game kick as much ass as people say?

P.S. I know the genre: Survival Horror.

Maybe it was just me but I got this game some 6 months ago, I just couldn’t get in to it. I know it's rated, but honestly I found it dated and to be honest boring...maybe I didn't give it a chance to get going.

It's still tucked in my drawer and I’m hoping to get some form of inspiration to give it a shot again....I won't hold my breath

aaalllll-righty then.....

1) I wouldn't know, I haven played dues ex yet. D:

2) Not really, and some of the stuff that happened in System Shock one is recapped in the intro video anyway.

3) it kicks 100x more ass than people say! GET IT NOW YOU FIEND! :D

hello
1) system shock 2 is older that deus ex 1, the gameplay is similar (skill upgrade, limited inventory) but the graphic are less interesting, really low-polygon. There is a mod that make the models look better but it was never finished, there is still a beta http://perso.wanadoo.fr/etienne.aubert/sshock/sshock_rebirth.htm

2) I never finish system shock 1 (really too old and in dos) but like Teta_Bonita said everything is explained in the movies and in the datapad that you find during the game.

3) That game is really good and everyone that liked deus ex should try it, personaly its in 3rd place in my favorite game list. The only thing I found annoying is that weapons wear over time and broke, you can repair them but you need skill. You don't have this problem if you decide to become a psy power user.

if you have a dual processor or hyper threading computer you might have problem running the game, there is a special launcher on internet that solve the problem.

Well, the reason I Hyphenated the "Getting" word is because I'm downloading it, and I have Dial-up (OMG) so, in about 4 days I will "Get" it.

I WOULD MOST DEFINATLY BUY THIS GAME, BUT WHEN I WENT TO ABOUT 5 PAWN SHOPS AND EB GAMES THEY DID NOT HAVE IT, SO PLEASE DON'T TELL ME TO BUY IT, BECUASE I WOULD HAVE IF I COULD. SO THE ONLY WAY TO GET THIS GAME IS DOWNLOADING IT OR eBay AND I'M NOT WAITING FOREVER FOR THEM TO SHIP IT TO ME.

I got a very thorough 10 paged FAQ on the web on how to run System Shock 2 on windows XP and high-end Computers, So I probably won't need to worry about that (10 Pages for crying out loud!)

Yeah, I got the demo for this game, and I tried to get into it, but then it kept shutting down my pc....same thing happened with GTA 1, its so weird. Oh well, fewer old school games for Gunner :(
Where is this guide you speak of to get it running? typing it into google is far too much work :upstare:

I "got" that game about a year ago and it was pretty good for how old it is, and it just gets better as you go along. Unfortunately I was never able to view the intro video because the version I "got" wouldn't play it when I started a new game :( probably would have explained a lot of the story for me...

I hope you'll get the cutscenes in your download, because sometime to make the file smaller they remove them. The first time I played, it was a downloaded version, I was really angry at the end, I didn't know what happen. I found a copy and finally saw the really cool ending 3 month ago. Is it legal to put the cutscenes on internet ?

Very cool and creepy game. One of the best ever.

Speaking of, is BioShock still in development?
It sure is and it sounds awesome! There's a huge feature in the new Game Informer (US) about it. They have some really amazing plans for that title. From their new AI system ("AI Ecology") to the unique ability upgrade system to the interesting "guided training" system, this one looks to break lots of new ground in the FPS world. (See the article for more details on those.) The screenshots/concept art looks amazing! You should check it out if you get a chance. You can't miss it--its on the cover!

In many ways its probably not a great idea to play the first. As the whole point is that your character has no idea what happened all those years ago :P

The only thing I didn't like about this game was the weapon wear. Everything else--and I mean everything--was pure awesome.

It had half-dissected psychic monkeys! Just like in my dreams!

Shock 2 = Irrational / Looking Glass
Deus Ex = Ion Storm

So they're not actually the same design team, though I suppose it could be argued that they have a similar ethos given that Irrational and Ion Storm split from Looking Glass. And Shock 2 predates Deus Ex by about a year, though their dev cycles were concurrent.

Many people, me included, played the games back to front. Whilst the games have quite a lot of detail in their plots, they're almost entirely self-contained and the few details that are important are given in the intro or in other communicative sequences.

It kicked as much ass as people say. Whether it kicks is another matter. The years haven't been kind and it may simply not be to your taste. I've personally played it to death and noticed little depreciation of enjoyment.

Well, Graphics I could care less about, I still play Deus Ex 1 all the time, I just beat it for the 4th time 2 days ago, I'm just starting a new game now, so I doubt I will care about the graphics, I still play "The Ultimate Doom".

Theres one part of the game that totally blows you away, and its one of the best cutscenes i've ever seen in any game ever. Its that awesome.

less talk about warez plx
Fair enough, but if EA aren't selling System Shock 2 on a budget label in the UK (or the rest of the world AFAIK), there is no legitimate way for anyone to obtain the game (EA don't give two shits about "legal" second-hand sales through EBay, because it gets them no revenue. With a potential sequel in the works, they'd probably be more interested in letting as many people as possible experience the game they refuse to re-release). Abandonware may be Warez in your view, but it sure as hell isn't harming anyone right now. You don't think EA would have stopped the abandonware sites if they really had a problem with it?

Even if SS2 were abandonware, "ABANDONWARE" IS ILLEGAL TO DISTRIBUTE.
Bottom line, end of story.

Copyrights are not considered abandoned even if they are no longer enforced, so the software does not enter the public domain just because they are no longer commercially exploited or widely available.

For the record, Jeff Brown (Executive President, Corporate Communications at EA) says:

"We pride ourselves in aggressively protecting our intellectual property rights, and we frequently pursue those who try to distribute our games without permission."

There are no titles in the Electronic Arts library that they consider to be abandonware.

Official word from Irrational: "No, System Shock 2 is not abandonware, plese don't warez it."

Ner ner. :P

Though an egregious Necropost...

I so very much want to debate the 'i'm so right' attitude that Warezing a thing, after many years since it's last availability domestically, is illegal. I mean, a Lawyer should know the difference between a profit and a monopoly of ideas right? What would Alexander Hamilton think of it?

Alexander Hamilton, who held the very existence of the Patent Office in his judgment at one time during America's law-making years, only agreed to let the Patent Office be as it was because he *wanted everything invented* to pass into the Public Domain in a short time after its invention, so as to promote critical thinking and such. The time that he set, and all parties representing, agreed upon was to total Five Years. If a patent was renewed, it was only if it was re-invented or very well improved upon, like say a transition from Incandescent Bulbs to Flourescent Bulbs would be repatentable whereas adding 3 'high quality' filaments to an already patented lightbulb would not be patentable nor re-patentable.

Think about it: Under the Patent Laws of today, the Lightbulb could (and from what we know of Ben, *would*) still be re-patented by a representative party of Benjamin Franklin, and we'd never be able to buy lightbulbs but from one person/store/company, as creating near or exact replicas would, if Hamilton was still around, be immediately and swiftly cut down from being patented and the creator/distributor heavily fined for theft of property.

We'd still be in the dark ages, for crying out loud, and wouldn't have all those nifty inventions like 'flourescent bulbs' and the like.

I just want someone to admit it, 95 years is too damned long for anything to be patented to serve the interests of the Public Good, which is the Public Domain; the before law of having it at 20 years would've been shot down by Hamilton without a blink of an eye and we.

"Warez"ing games, according to what Hamilton was trying to represent with his agreement so long ago to the idea of a Patent Office, IS passing things into the Public Domain, (albeit without the permission of the owner, but owners have become very crass and smug, even winning support of congress and such to deprive the Public Domain of materials that should rightfully be theirs in the first place) and Deus Ex and Tetris and Mickey Mouse should all be free, have no owner, and be 'owned' by the Public. So, in reality, letting companies get away with 'oh we invented that a billion years ago, give us cash or we'll put you in jail, and no we're not going to provide it for you any more anyway' is unpatriotic, or at the least, Unhamilton.

Besides, the Patent Office is borked. In the next fifty years, there either will be a complete revision to the Patent Laws, or the Patent Office will be a joke ("Hey, you remember the Patent Office?! We made like, a thousand bucks off of patenting the letters 't' and 'h'! You remember that, dude?" "Yeah, and Hilton make a cool million off of Trump when he said 'Hot' on TV that one time! Those were the days, man..."). I expect that Software (and stupidity such as the patented word 'hot' [courtesy Paris Hilton]) will get the axe immediately.

On a last note, SDKing a game is basically passing it into the Public Domain, as it allows the public to see what makes something work. In essence, the concept of it is represented here, but Hamilton would hate the fact that you're still being charged for the software at that point, if not hating the fact that software can be 'sold' at all (hey, he would only approve of 'hard' materials anyway, given the times he lived in and the fact that he was a lawyer).

I disagree that it is an immoral thing to take someone else's great idea when they've been keeping it to themselves for more than ten years. It's like giving someone a joke and witholding them their due punchline for ninety-five years, or fifty after their death, and then giving it to them. It's just stupid logic.

Excuse me for the necropost, but I could not bear to look at that and do or say nothing.

considering how this game is near impossible to find in stores i see no problems with downloading it.
