seems like someone read this statement thought it was funny and just plain made a story around it...look at all the things that match

Earle Lomon (MIT)

The S=-2 di-hyperon sector has long been of interest because of an early prediction of a bound di-lambda (H particle) (R.L. Jaffe, Phys. Rev. Lett.\/) 38, 195 (1977).. However the R-matrix model, which includes long range hadronic effects as well as short range perturbative quark/gluon contributions, predicts a higher mass \Lambda\Lambda-\Xi N resonance at 2.35~GeV/c^2 (E.L. Lomon, AIP Conf. Proc.\/) 187, 8th Int. Symp. on High Energy Physics, K.J. Heller ed. (MN, 1988), p. 630 . Searches for the bound state have been negative (R.W. Stotzer et al., Phys. Rev. Lett.\/) 78, 3646 1997., leaving the possibility that the predicted resonance exists. In fact the exotic in question, a dimF=1, [q(1s_1/2)]^4 [s(1s_1/2)]^2 quark configuration, overlaps more strongly with the \Xi-N and \Sigma-\Sigma channels than with the \Lambda-\Lambda channel. Because of that and the fact that the exotic resonance is predicted to be above the \Xi-N threshold, the effect of the resonance should be substantial in \Xi-N scattering, a process observable in the laboratory using polarized or unpolarized nuclear targets. We are constructing a coupled channel R-matrix model for these channels, with meson exchange potentials at long range, so that specific predictions can be made for \Xi-N scattering. This will predict the observable effects of the \Lambda-\Lambda and \Sigma-\Sigma thresholds as well as that of the exotic resonance. Results will be described at the conference.

Xi-n =Xen
Lambda=lambda
and the guy who wrote it is from MIT?
or am i being to skeptical?

I don't think it's coincidence at all. It's possible someone at Valve read this, found it intersting and a plot developed out of it... As for whether all that will come true... Meh, guess we'll find out. I think it's be kinda cool to be a resistance fighter :D

...Or perhaps these guys played Half-Life, noticed that it had some real world connections (labda particles, whatever the **** those are, and xen, as the x-in) and are trying to make it reality.

/me hides crowbar and braces for impact.

This is cool do you think they are still working on it how long ago was this "conferrence"?

Don't double post. :p

Also, start stockpiling canned food, bottled water and batteries.

And Pineapple juice.

To soak your head in.

Headcrabs hate the taste of Pineapple juice.

I wouldn't go for the bottled water, just find some good wine, that'll last and you'll only forget what happened the night before.

as well as short range perturbative quark/gluon contribution

the effect of the resonance should be substantial in \Xi-N

The HL1 chamber was called the "Resonance Chamber"... the effect of that chamber was substantial in Xen.

I do believe it is purely coincidental, however.

My god, it's over.... we're all doomed... I wonder who gets to be Gordon Freeman's REAL LIFE alternative? Lol... sort of... I'm gonna look up the term resonance cascade and see what it is. But first... (Me takes a crowbar and puts it under the pillow) there we go. :sniper:

Edit: Yeah we're pretty much in trouble IF there was any way the government got thier hands on one of those crystals...

lastHOPE_lambda

but is it possible? could some one cause resonance cascade?

Yes it theoretically would be possible if we had the crystal or something similar to it in molecular composition. Let's just hope that the G-Man doesn't try to screw it up in some way. HE WAS INVOLVED IN THE HL1 CASCADE! Somehow.....

I don't remember that from my physics classes. :rolling:

And I think,
That since this MIT published cr@p is true, maybe someone in Valve knew it back in '98 and drew the names out of it and built the game around it.
Now there's a though.

ever think about this?

actually when you think about it, hl2 has a lot of things similar to real life and other fiction occurrences, if you will. im not going to list any, unless you need some examples, just say so.

Resonance is a real life phenonenom as is a lot of things in HL2. Entanglement, EPR paradox, EPR brides, etc etc have a basis in theoritcal physics.

Oh crap... Thats spooky. Well, since everyone has pulled the crowbar joke so what the heck, ill do it to! *runs of to buy a crowbar

Aw damn.

No blondes in the future.

Well duh, they're such easy prey for headcrabs of course none would survive.

I'm a physics noob too, I'm a biology/chemistry guy :)

What the hell? You're all physics noobs.

Yeah so?

Not everyone has an MIT graduation.
Imagion if everyone did... That whould not be nice.

It's a particle accelerator experiment. They're trying to find patterns in the way that the resultant particles produced by the collision scatter. Not nearly enough energy to even cause a vacuum phase change (which, if it DID happen, you wouldn't notice, because we'd all be dead within moments).
Resonance doesn't mean cascades. Resonance simply means "vibrations". You get resonance when blowing through a cardboard tube and making a note. Atoms vibrate - especially if you throw them into each other at super-fast speeds.

Xi is a Greek letter. "Xen" means "foreign" - http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=Xen
