I assume it is the release date. Game developers always ship to retailers a couple of days early to allow the stores to recieve, package and ship out the game to preorderers.

Also, many stores allow a day for postage, so they ship the day before. I live very close to my local store, there policy is that people recieve the game either on the release date or the day before.

I suspect we will be seeing "OMG!!! I HAVE HL2!!!" posts appearing on the 15th. With a bit of luck I will be one of the people making them.
