I currently have a lot to do (Suprise suprise given the situation), so I am going to make this short.

My house mate just called. They have arrived home to find the house broken into, and amoungst other things, my laptop stolen.

Now, I have google browser sync running, and if connected to the internet, and firefox is started, its going to log it somewhere with google. Which means that if they are stupid enough to put it online and open firefix, thier IP address will be logged. So, I need to know if there is any way to access your own browser sync logs to find out who has accessed what?

Yes, I will contact google, but they won't be open at the moment, so I thought I would check if anyone here knows of a way to find out.

"if they are stupid enough to put it online and open firefix"

I am not sure that guarantees the thief's ISP is willing to cooperate on this matter. But sorry about your laptop. You should have kept it hidden...

So do you hide everything of value when you're gone?

I'm not sure if there is a way, hopefully you can retrieve your laptop though, man. If you have a serial to the Laptop, give it to a bunch of places that works on computers and buys/sells them. That way if they come across it, they will notify the authorities. That's what happened here. Some schmucks stole 2 laptops from school, so they put the numbers to a bunch of places around town, and eventually the kids tried to sell them to a place, and got busted.

Hint 1: Get a gun.
Hint 2: **** those bastards up.
Hint 3: Drink some well deserved beer and watch TV.

Can't you just get your local ISP to track the MAC address of the system?

Unless you don't know it, which wouldn't surprise me.

Now that I think of it, I'm going to copy down my MAC address for that very reason.

i doubt that will use internet, usually these people are thugs or crackheads who will pawn your laptop the same day, sorry that happened,

my buddy got broken in also and they took his electric guitar and amp, funny because he has a HUGE tv, but i guess they just couldn't carry that out

They were on the first see first grab basis...

Oh this is getting interesting. I can't say any more at the moment, but it looks like whoever did this is not the brightest spark. Hopefully should have more info tommorow

*Edit* - Nothing to do with google either :D

should've put that gps tracking chip inside

actually did you have some wireless cards on that laptop?

Glad to hear things may be looking up for you Link, I can't imagine if someone broke in and stole something valuable of mine.

Hope you get yourself sorted there Linky

this won't work. If their behind a router or something you'll never see the mac address. And if they go through a dsl/cable/broadband modem that will block the mac address too.

D:
o noes.
Hope you get that laptop back.

I don't claim to know a lot about networking. I do know some though, and I can say with 99% certainty, you're wrong. At least, with my ISP I know you're wrong.

My router receives internet by cloning my current computer's MAC address so the ISP can identify and allow access to the router, and then allow the connection.

Wikipedia said:
Some internet service providers bind their service to a specific MAC address; if the user then changes their network card or intends to install a router, the service won't work anymore.

How is it possible for an ISP to deny access based on a MAC address, but not know the address?

Source

However, I see your point in the sense that if they plugged the laptop into a router, not using the laptop as the cloned mac address.....then it would be hidden.

damnit! That would work!

Blast, foiled again.

However, going through a modem will not hide a MAC address, at least from my understanding.

Going through a router should hide MAC address though..

Unless the person used the laptop as the cloned mac address to connect to the Internet. But if the laptop wasn't the cloned one....well yea, I guess (as I said in my post) it would hide it.

I knew it to be true.
All Steven's are untrustworthy. I should know.

Gee, I wonder if Link is going to return to tell us what happened? Maybe he found the guy, but got killed?!

NOOOO!

No news yet, as I forgot it was christmas/new year. However, the person I need to talk to should be avalible as of today.

You would have to:

1) know the MAC address of your laptop (which you don't have)
2) then somehow prove to the thief's ISP (whom of which you don't know) that the MAC address belongs to your stolen laptop and not of an innocent user
3) then that ISP would have to give personal information away to you about that person (such as their location), which is not legally possible to do.

So, sorry to say, but I don't see it happening without using more resources than a simple IP.
