Me and my wife have both bought HL2. We can play against each other on our local LAN, however we are unable to both play on an Internet-based server. We can't do it with HL1 either (whereas we used to be able to do that when that wasn't yet Steamb-based).
We are both at the same external IP address, and I think that might be the problem.

Is there a way to fix this? Perhaps I'd need to configure the router to do some port forwarding, or the games will need to be configured to use another port? I don't know, exactly. A step-by-step manual would be much appreciated.

Well.. what happens when you try to both connected to a game over the internet?
What kind of error do you get?

We do not get an error. We just both cannot get a list of servers (or at least the second one who tries, cannot get that list).

Hm... You ARE using seperate steam accounts, right? I know it's possible for multiple people to play from the same IP (I've played with 5+ people on the same network for ladder games/etc), but I'm not sure if anything extra needs to be done to allow that.

Yes, we are using separate steam accounts. We both bought the package. It just doesn't work...

The weird thing is...this very evening we tried and we managed to both join the Internet server. So it appears this has been addresses in an update somewhere along the line. We're happy, and we didn't even need to do any port forwarding!
