Two important improvements

Me and my friends use Steam and MSN.

There are only two reasons we use MSN:

1) Because Steam doesn't have CHAT-HISTORY, we are much more comfortable of
telling important things, that we must remember, at MSN chat.
If your friend writes something important (like homework) there and leaves
the chat right after it... If you make one accedental move, and close the
window...

2) You can't load stuff (like Word and Paint files) from person to another
with Steam.

If Steam would have these two qualities, we would not have to use anything but Steam EVER AGAIN.

steam is meant for social networking with games. its possible they could add file trasnfer in the future though.

If Steam added IRC support over Steam, I would never have to open Trillian again. That said, they'd have to do things like save chat logs and file transfers like you said. While I think those are great ideas, I'm not sure if it's in Valve's priorities right now. Also, I'm not sure that the Steam team looks in 3rd party sites like this for suggestions, but maybe someone could send an email addressing chat improvements.
