Unreal engine 3.0, dedicated physics prosessor card support

according to this article
http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/03/08/news_6119896.html
Unreal engine 3.0 has support for the first dedicated physics prosessor card (PPU)

The physics are currently calculated by your CPU, and thus only having toe possebility's for minor physics calculation and a max of 30/40 objecs on screen, but the PPU cards enable 30.000/40.000 objects with heavy calculations and stuff like realistic water and such

w00tage!

/me changes pants

so does that mean that future graphics cards will have a psychics prosessor card?

nah, it's a separate thing. A PCI/PCI-E card purely for handling physics.

so there'd be a seperate card for physics? hmmm wouldnt mobos have to re-design this into their architecture or can it use the standard pci-e slot? ...I'm a hardware n00b be gentle :)

HOLY SHIT!!! Will these "psychic prosessor cards" be able to tell my future? If so, how? Crystal ball, tarot cards, or just old fashioned tea-leaves?

Oh, wait...... you mean PHYSICS. That's much less interesting.. :P

It'd work on any PCI or PCI-E system as a standard add-in card.

Wow. I wonder how expensive PPUs will be...
Very neat.

i wondered what you were on about for about 30 seonds when first reading that.......psychic processor "oh noes it can read your mind!!!"
Actually on topic, thats sweet, mass physics detail is the way to go....dynamic surfaces e.t.c e.t.c.

Half life 2 prooved how important physics is.....you know its another way to interact with the game.

oh ok ....so is this the secret you had hinted at about in a pervious post about something big coming to gaming?? ...it isnt is it? ..so what is it? oh come on! you cant just make a statement like that and expect us to forget it!!!! TELL USSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!

here's your post

I love arguing with myself

woops misspelled physics lol, always hated spelling that word

anyway, I immagine HL³ having support for it
w00tage

Who doesn't love arguing with you? :P

Anyways the question is will we have to have one of those cards to run the engine?

I just hope they're relatively cheap ..although my computer buying cycle hasnt run it's course ..I have another year

I'd not worry, I get the impression these cards will be as important as a video card if you want to play _any_ games soon. So no doubt there will be a card war with them, just rename all the my ATI is better than your nVidia threads to be about physics cards and you've got a vision of the future :p

I can't wait, UE3 is getting better and better.

nah its just support, but I immagine having to need it if you want all the hardcore spiffy particle dynamics, breakable stuff, an even more interactive world, making dents in steel, cloth dynamics and water physic simulation

Oh kinda like the Ultra mode thingy in Doom 3?

Basically it's just an extra if you want the best.

I presume it is his secret project, a first person shooter. He says it is revolutionary, i'd like to see what makes it so.

Cool to the pool, Unreal engine 3 sounds like the bee's bollocks :)

This card is only for Novodex physics engine, so engine dependent apparently. Maybe there will be a standard for physics in the future too like a form of Direct3D.

Now an AI processor :)

YAY!!! 1 more component I have to worry about blowing my cash on!!!!

but seriously, that sounds fantastic.
realistic cloth and water dynamics here we come :D

*Sigh*
It sure sounds nice but imagine the prices that might come, soon perhaps we'll have a Lightining Render Card, etc...:|
I need to rob Bill Gates, anyone with me?:frown:

30.000/40.000 physical objects...

thats alot of barrels :D

Damn euro comma/period swapping. At first I read something like "up to 40 and 0 thousanths objects"

Yeah basically.

And who was it that said that water simulation (As in ridgid-body) wouldn't be possible? Oh, Bill Gates... Well at least we're one step closer. ;)

oh yeah, /me changes pants too :D

Partly.

Physics is secondary to gameplay.

Oh wow awesome :D

Fluid simulations, hair, grass, fur... All coming from physics :D Oh and I bet the flight simmers will love it (now they can create models that react to air dynamics correctly!)

I'm trying not to get too excited about this because I dread the sobering feeling that finding out what the price is will bring.

Well I'm guessing it will cost around the same for a CPU (maybe 200 bucks)

quote from that article:
Big guys like Gabe Novell, the developer of Half Life 2, asked for more physics and Jon Carmak of Doom 3 wanted the same. The industry likes the marchitecture and developers want to programme for it. The

*little lol*, and I guess it also confirms that valve is putting support for it in HL³ wootage

nah, don't go to far, I think the card will cost no more than the Audgy 2 zx sound card retailer edition

It's more than that...
