On starting HL2, steam has started an upgrade. Unfortunately the upgrade is reporting that it will complete in around 3340 minutes. I can't wait that long!!! I have a 56k Modem and cannot get broadband without loads of hastle. Is there any way around this Problem? :(

oh man... I gues you just have to suffer until you decide to buy an illegal copy or upgrade to a broadband.

If you really want the update, just wait. That's what I'm doing. Let your computer run through the night.

3340 minutes = 55 hours. Youch. Sadly there isn't an offline Steam update method. Bummer for you :(

well, atleast you can play it after you download it for 2 and a half days. after continuos downloading.

erm...the 3340 minutes is not probably the correct time, because sometimes it just jumps one hundred minutes in one second. I am on dialup too(64k) and it always shows the wrong time to me.

yea! samo is right, for me it started showing about 1500 min left, but it lasted about 2 hours... I think....

Use offline mode. This way you will not ever have to update(unless you delete the game)

Thanks for your replies. unfortunately I had to go online as I had the error regarding the loss of account information. And regarding times, Im getting feedback from the steam monitor saying I have only downloaded 2%. hopefully though it will get to about 10% then wizz through to 100% in no-time. Can you see now why I bought the game, Dreamer!!. On a more serious note can anyone tell me how I get around the 2hours connection limit provided by my isp. Is this a registry change? or an isp change? Cheers ( its just changed to 3% by the way)

Or just do like me and take your computer or hard drive to a friends house who has high speed and dl it from there.

Wish I could help... I doubt you'll be able to get around the 2hour limit, I think that's done on the ISP's end. This reminds me of when AA:OPs first came out... it took me a week to download the first client when I was on 56k.

i get 1.5 mbits/second for about $26.99 USDollars per month Its sooo faaast and soooo cheeeeaaappp!

Dude WTF! You are getting like 14.8k connections! You might be on a 56k, but your ISP and modem are gay as hell. I could download about 1.6 gigs in that time on my 56k. I get disconnections around every 24 hours, though usually it takes longer. I get 200ping in games. You are a bad 56ker!! Bad 56ker!! You discrace me! Am I the only decent 56ker alive?(Broadband is not around where I live)

It could be his line, ISP or modem config. I had a problem with my broadband (Comcast) where they upgraded the service and it knocked my modem offline. Actually it would connect for 2 - 3 minutes then get knocked offline, reconnect and run 2 - 3 minutes, etc etc. It took me forever to update HL2. Thank God I got a new modem and now I'm at 3Mb again. Any way the point is that it could be any number of things killing his transfer rate.

BTW: Mr. Tee, if you live anywhere near Chicago PM me. You're welcome to stop by here and get the dowload @ 3Mb instead of 56Kb.

if only quality internet was as cheap as every other piece of technology... <<<<I will kill you if you click the link!!!
