In a statement to Ars Technica, Valve's Doug Lombardi said that developers, "big and small," will be able to apply for a Developer Edition of the HTC Vive. The dev kit "will be free, at least initially," said Doug.

Applications will open as early as next week through a new webpage on Steam, and the dev kits themselves won't be released until later this Spring.

Demand will clearly be high for such a deal, but Doug Lombardi gave no details on how Valve will prioritize applicants. There's also no information on how many kits will be given out during this initial phase of shipments.

The dev kit will come with "a headset, two controllers and two base stations," according to the SteamVR webpage.

Valve's strategy is quite different from Oculus's. Oculus has offered their various dev kits to all that are willing to pay the ~$300 for the Rift Head-Mounted Display. HTC Connected Products Marketing Executive Director Jeff Gattis also said that the consumer edition of the HTV Vive would be "a slightly higher price point" than comparable hardware like the Rift or Morpheus. It's going to be interesting to see how many of these HTC Vive dev kits will be distributed for free, and where they are distributed.

Free you say?

Might need to get my game out of the moth balls then.
