vertical sync on video card

guys im curious....when i turn that on my FPS is like 60....wont go higher then 60...now i disable it and its like around 100....is it necessary to use the vertical sync cuz to me it dont make much of a difference...ih i dont have a monitor...i have well i forgot what u call it....ive put my AA and AF on and off and vertical sync on and off and i get same results...so its the vertical sync...but still i have a radeon x850 platinum edition card...do i need v synch turned on?....thanks

vsync will stop you monitor tearing the images displayed (often only during fast motion) if its refresh rate is below what your fps is. So if your standard 17inch monitor gets 1240x1024@60hz, and your video card allows for you to have more than 60fps, youll get tearing, because the horizontal refresh is out of sych with the vertical. I often play at 1024x768, which i can get 85hz at, so with vsynch on of off i get very little tearing. Some people aren't bothered by it anyhow.
Turn it on if you want crisp clear movement ALL the time, and if your monitor allows for a decent framerate, because vsync will never let your fps go above the refresh rate.

I suggest having the refresh rate at at least 75Hz. It's bad for your eyes if it's 60. I've got the max for 1024x768 on my monitor which is 85Hz.

thats my problem sir...its set at 75.....but in the game the vertical synch wont go past 60....it said in my manual for my flat panel monitor the optimal setting for 1280x1024 is 60....maybe thats why?

The X850XT is ATI's current highend gfx card. If you have the X850XT, keep it. GFX memory means squat between those two cards. The 7000 is a number of years old. Your image quality in games would go right down the tube if you put in a 7000.

Yes, refresh rates don't work the same on LCD Screens as they do on CRT's since the pixels on your monitor aren't written to as such. The refresh rate still has an affect but you won't notice that much of a difference between 60hz and 75hz so you could just set your monitor to 60hz if you wanted to.

It's still proven that 60hz affect our eyes. Our brains don't register the flicker but our eyes do, and over the course of longer periods it can have destructive effects. And you can't really compare this with TV's and such since most people don't sit half a meter close to the TV for anything between 2 between 8 hours, and sometimes even more.
