w00t radeon x700!

w00t with 'ya!

Would this be a better choice over the ATI 9800 Pro 128 MB RAM/256-bit for mainstream buyers?

As far as i am aware this card is PCIe only.... not AGP but i will have to look into that!

I assume that this is the 6800NU's competition, right?

No its more of a direct competitor for the 6600GT and a total replacement for the x600 series since the x600 performed so poorly against the 6600GT

Very well. I think ATi really needs to make a competitor for the 6800NU, though... seeming as it's slightly better than the 9800 Pro for very little extra expense.

very true. Whilst ATI have come out slightly on top at the very high end this time around I would have to say nvidia currently have the middle and lower and of the market in terms of price/performance. This part of the market is where the vast majority of the profit is made.

Heh, yet most only care about the most powerful card debate. Usually how it works, though.

Actually in the benchmarks I've seen from anandtech, the 6600GT is very close to the 6800NU, sometimes even BEATING it. You can see that in the Halo benchmark.

Looks like anandtech just put up something on the X700, benches maybe? I'm gonna go read it now.

The x700XT isn't faring too badly at all against the 6800NU - The Far Cry performance shows it only lagging behind by around ten FPS.

You have to remember that the 6600GT benchmarked was a PCI Express card and ran on a different system. Both the 6600GT and X700 are only PCI Express for the time being.

:) Not really too hyped about the x700, because I got an x800 Pro and I am not at all hyped about it... Only thing that caught my eye was the Catalyst AI! Is this x700 exclusive? It's not in my Control Panel.

Just looked at the benchmarks, good card, but it only beats the 6600GT in Far Cry and the VST. Another strange thing is in Far Cry the 6600GT actually beats the X700XT with AA and AF on, I thought that was weird. Good card, but for now not better than the 6600GT. But ATi can still fix that.

*sigh* a card to depress people that just bought X600s

I'm getting tired of nVidia and ATi fighting between themselves - I wish there was another serious competitor...

what? xgi? get away... I said serious

Hey, they did it with last year's models too. ;) Different versions of the FX 5600 and then the 5700. I think there were different versions of the 9600 as well.

The graphics market was much simpler before Nvidia failed to get the FX 5800 out the door on time.

we know there is an agp 6600 soon...

From where did you hear that? As far as i am aware the 6600GT was to be PCIe only...

Bah I got to play on the X800 XT, overrated overpriced rubbish if you ask me (still nice though :) ), my 9600 XT is perfect at present :) £350 cheaper too (pets it).

The GeForce 6600GT is the $199 part and has 8 pixel-pipelines, 3 vertex engines and is using a 128-bit memory bus connected to GDDR3. The GeForce 6600 has everything the 6600GT has except it uses DDR1 and will be clocked lower on the core and memory. Both of these video cards are native PCI-Express and the 6600GT supports NVIDIA’s new SLI technology, but we will certainly see AGP inteface cards this year.

(edit, find "agp")
