weird & annoying shadows on cliffs

the attached screen shows a bit of a cliff face with the mat_wireframe view overlaid (and negativised). why are there those little shadows at the displacement vertexes? or perhaps that should be: why are the non-vertex parts of the displacement lit too brightly, forming a series of fuzzy circles running up the cliff face?

this is annoying the crap out me, so any insights would be welcome

p.s. i've adjusted the gamma to 2.0 for clarity's sake. the screens always come out too dark...

i really cant tell what im looking at and where. could you possiblly take a better screenshot?
 
Interpolation artifacts caused by the Phong shader algorithm malfunctioning on your GPU.

Or that's what I'd bet they are. Update your drivers, see if that helps.
 
Huh? that might be it.

Although more likeley the SDK or something is a bit broken still. Check the "known issues" in the official wiki and see if this is mentioned.
