The Combine, who have orchestrated the Black Mesa incident have been defeated. The only remaining loose end yet to be tied up is the G Man, and he's become a sort of unofficial boss of Gordon Freeman. So who's left to fight? I mean, what could possibly be more dangerous than the Combine.

The combine haven't been defeated; the Citadel's explosion at the end of Episode One sent a message to the Combine homeworld, presumably for reinforcements, and also opened a superportal that causes all kinds of problems in Ep2.
We probably won't see the defeat - or even the final disappearance, or whatever - of the Combine until the end of Episode Three.

1. The Combine did not orchestrate the resonance cascade.
2. The Combine are not defeated, if you played Ep. 1 with your brain on.
3. G-Man is no longer Freeman's boss, if you played Ep. 1 with your brain on.

You did turn it on, right?

I remember reading on an HL2 site that Dr. Breen was contacted by the Combine who promised him riches and power in exchange for negotiating Earth's surrender. I'll look at the site and see how reliable it is. I know there are still thousands of Combine controlled worlds but aren't the combine cut off from reinforcements if the Citadel is destroyed. Which might not happen, in that case, we're screwed. And I have not yet played episode 1.

I read this on the Half Life 2 Story Saga. Don't know how reliable it is but I read it before I was a huge Hl2 fan so I trusted it.

) Breen Triggers the Resonance Cascade - Wallace Breen, under supervision by the Combine Overlords, triggers a resonance cascade within the Anomalous Materials sector of the Black Mesa complex, by selecting a specific test sample to be used. His selection of this hazardous material is masked by a system crash, which Breen most likely triggers to cut out formal communication between scientists. A mysterious figure, G-Man is aware of Breen's plan and tries to prevent the Resonance Cascade, but fails. This "volatile portal" allows the Combine to send their initial forces to take over Black Mesa and prepare for the main invasion. Nihilanth's race seens the dimentional fissure as their big escape plan, their way out. Of course headcrabs and other life trapped on Xen decide to hitch a ride to Earth, for the fun of it. G-Man prepares a task force to deal with the main portal and prepares US soldiers to fight the aliens. Black Mesa becomes a messy situation, as many species and technologies clash.

Half-Life 2 Story Saga doesn't make much sense, is not reliable (written by a fan), and most people here (like me) don't like it.

It does makes sense, but is derived from wrong basis.

The HL2 Story Saga is OK, but it should come with a warning that a lot of the info contained within it is near-baseless speculation. And the part about the Combine taking over Xen is plain outdated/wrong.

Never look at that website again. :D

Combine Orchestrating Resonance Cascade =|.

I'd find it EASIER to believe, that Gordon went to work stoned, or it was a wedge of Cheese, or that an Assassin could date a Marine, or a Garg could placy Soccer (Concerned rules ^^).

The combine don't ONLY have their homeworld, they ALSO have all the OTHER planets they presumably conquered.

Also, in my opinion, the Half-Life saga, is awesome. I'll admit, it's a little far fetched, but I'd rather play it, believing more in a giant Galactic Federation (Combine) than think you could eat a mushroom an grow(Mario), or that aliens could come out of the ground (War of the Worlds), or even find 'ring-worlds' in space (Halo). I mean, yeah, it's awkward. A Guy that spawns from no where, and vanishes. A secret research base (other than Area 51) in the middle of the desert, a huge alien race that doesn't just kill everyone, and a giant floating being, with metal antennae coming out of its ass, but I still think it holds up pretty well.

Okay, so before i even got Hl2 I read something and trusted it. Now you guys are trashing mas if I st flamed HL2, can you guys give me a break? Honestly.

1: If you read the threads in this section labelled READ THIS and stickied to the top of the forum then you'd know that Story Saga site is wrong.

2: That said, there's nothing to say for definite that the Combine weren't behind the resonance cascade. It certainly benefited them afterwards (Though, possibly not in the long run. We'll see when EP3 comes out). My pet theory is that the Combine hired the g-man to help them break into Xen, allowing the g-man to fulfil his end of the deal in whatever way he chose, and he used the resonance cascade and, later, Gordon.

1, you made a mistake, I wouldn't want to spoil the game for myself by reading up on it AND THEN playing it. Though I made that mistake by watching my friend beat it.

2, You posted a bunch of unreliable stuff, that was probably ALREADY shot down in the Sticky threads.

3, FINALLY, people make mistakes, it's nothing personal, and it's a dog-eat-dog world out there, get used to it ;)

Yea don't worry mate, just realize that the HL Saga is rubbish.

The reason I read up on the game was because I didn't know that I even had a chance of getting it, considering that my computer was having issues and I never used to be a PC gamer. And I now realize the error of my ways and will no longer trust HL2 story saga.

Never trust anything else, other then the OFFICIAL sites and news.

I did the same with EP1 =P

But I was smart enough to only question what I read when it was relevant, like when some one said something, it was more of a 'Really?'
Rather than 'But I read this, it must be right!'

the story saga is not all wrong

The fact that gman tried to stop the resonance cascade may be wright,if you listen to the mumble sounds from hl 1 and change speeds volume and stuff, you may hear what they say,and it says stuff like,"It is posible for it to happen"refering to the resonance cascade,i think that gman was an asociate of Dr.Breen, after all he has the black mesa logo on his briefcase and he found out Breen's plan,in a way or another and try to stop it as the story saga says

The mumble sounds are supposed to be incoherent. And they aren't heard in the game. Non-canon, true fail.

The saga website is wrong in certain places though.

well, valve made posible for us to hear them because theyw ant us to hearthem and becasue thy axtualy mean something, those sounds, and if you listen very carefully you can hear what they are talking even in the games, that if you have good ears

Actually, no you can't. They're inaudible.

You can hear the scientist's one pretty clearly though.
"I've told you a hundred times; I am opposed to pushing the equipment beyond its safe levels"
Or something like that. I don't remember it word-for-word.

What, ingame? Or from the audio recordings?

From the files, but I'm pretty sure it's the same in-game, just quiter.

Er. Those files are played behind a window. You can't hear them.

Yes you can, just about, if you turn up the volume...

I always thought City 13 was just number 13 of the cities the combine has built Citadels in. Beating one wouldn't eliminate the global threat, only weaken it locally. But i may be wrong - but why a number then? It's only logical to use numbers if they're in a sequence.

I imagine Half-life 2 & Episode 1 just being the first successful attack against the combine invasion. Reinforcement deployed out of the city, and reinforcement from other cities (Possibly reinforcement from beyond sent through the other Citadels) would then be the foes to meet in Episode 2. I can't imagine the combine being beaten, only in temporary chaos as one of their command centers has vanished. They just need to reestablish control, and eliminate the threat with more force than City 13 had in its arsenal.

Wouldn't make sense if the combine does not try to regain control, as they would then be unable to stop the forming rebellion. After all, they just want to drain the earth of its resources and move on - resistance is an annoyance that'll delay that goal, maybe even put it in danger.

I hope we get to see the combines true faces - those who control the puppets, not just the puppets. They gotta have some original race, and some sort of society with members in different stations.

I'm assuming the slug things, the Combine Advisors, are the "original race".

I made up a possible background once, borrowing heavily from some Sci Fi ideas.

Think of this. The things we now know as Advisors where large prey slugs on their planet. Their natural ability was some limited Psychic ability, giving them the chance to predict moves by being able to read minds and maybe cause pain in a predator using their minds. Then maybe they where visited by an advanced race, and managed to "read" things off of their minds. Maybe this race used them as slaves, or something else, and during this time they managed to psychically read and learn data from this new race. When the time came they took over and waged war. They might have won or maybe they're still at war, which would cause the need for their "Universal Union".

If the combine "slugs" are in war with an even greater foe, how can the combine then afford to attack earth? And if they CAN afford to attack earth, despite fighting a greater foe, then gordon sure has a job to do. But i suppose, if the fight on earth gets too demanding the combine would move away, instead of wasting resources needed elsewhere.

Because the resources to fight earth are nothing to them.

The Combine look like slugs because they grew dependent on their technology, and adapted to fit it. The slug form is not how they looked originally. They don't need limbs anymore, considering they are telekinetic and supported by technological senses.

Yeah, but I was thinking they where still slug like in the first place. Things don't randomly evolve like that.

It's explicitly mentioned in Ep. 1 that the explosion at the end of HL2 knocked out all of the Combine portals on Earth. They're completely cut off from the rest of the empire. So if Gordon ends up fighting reinforcements from other cities, it will be those cities' existing Earth garrisons.

Oh yeah, and it's called City 17. :P

So they engineer themselves to be totally dependent on their technology?

And the telekinesis. Don't forget the telekinesis. They don't need limbs. At that level of technology it's just redundant having limbs, since you could use that body mass for extra brain matter or what have you.

I wouldn't mind looking like an advisor if I get telekinesis and free mind-interwebs. Sure, you don't get the wonderful experiences of sex and football. Sex? That's what mindsex is for! Mwahahahaha! And football? Aww, woe is me, I can't run around on a field getting covered in my own juices while risking a broken leg!

Yeah, advisors have it made.
