If the G-Man found Alyx to be so valuable that he saved her from death at Black Mesa, why does he leave her for dead at the end of Half-Life 2? Maybe I missed something, but it doesn't add up for me.

Also, the G-Man says Gordon owes something for "his own survival." What survival is he talking about?

Maybe at the time he didn't think he'd have any use for Alyx, before the Vorti's interviened.

As for the second thing - Getting Gordon out of the Nihilianth's chamber and saving him from the citadel explosion. And letting him sit out the seven hour war in the cozy safety of suspended animation.

I think it might have been a way to black mail ELi at first. I've saved your daughter, now you owe me. Or, If I save your daughter you'll owe me. After Ep1, where she was basically Gordon's protector for a portion of the game, she proved capable enough for the G-Man to give a second look.

The G-Man's value of Alyx could be intimately linked with the fact that the Vortigaunts put her in such high regard: "If we lose her, we lose all". Sounds like she certainly has some yet unseen destiny that everyone needs her for. It's a little bit inconsistent with him just leaving her there, but again given this turn of events wasn't anticipated we may have been going towards a future where whether she survived or not didn't really matter. Now things have changed.

We also don't know if he wasn't going to simply put her in stasis after you anyway. The vortigaunts intervened at a fixed point in time, he could have feasibly done the same but didn't get around to it before the Vortigaunts did. Or perhaps he knew the Vortigaunts would rescue her, but didn't anticipate them collecting Gordon as well. After all Eli only seemed astounded that Gordon was found, if he knew both of them (or neither of them) would be rescued he wouldn't have been so shocked, as in he was the one who orchestrated her extraction.

Maybe the Vorts just have a thing for mulato gals.

Perhaps he knew Dog was coming, anyway.

Agh, what I don't liek is that Gman can put words in peoples mouths. Maybe the rabbit hole goes deeper.

I remember in the HL2, in the sand camp, the vortigaunts were talking in their own language. When you walk close to them, they mention that it's impolite to "flux shift" with those whose "Vortal (receptors? I need to go back and see what it was they said.....) something" are impaired. Maybe some humans are not "impaired"? After all, they have learned our language! Twenty years or not, its still quite a feat for a species to learn an alien language, and you'll notice no humans who can speak vortal! I also suspect their means of communication are not completely vocalized.

If he can put words in people's mouths, maybe he can take them away...

The G-man has muted gordon to prevent him from talking, I wonder why...

Gordon talks, you just cant hear it. Think about when you are at Black Mesa East, why would Judith say something about being calm if you were already quiet.

This bugged me too.
Probably it's because they wrote the story for Half-Life 2 and then decided to continue the story with the episodes.

So simply put,
they likely didn't plan that far ahead.

Personally, I'm going to go for cynicism and say that Valve didn't actually know the fine details of what they were going to do post Half-Life 2. This is why the Vortiguant intervention and Alyx's peril are so horridly contrived. Otherwise, some of the explanations above will do, but it doesn't make the inter-game transition any smoother.

I think he left her for dead. I mean, really, Gman had no intention of returning to Earth with Gordon. He seemed pretty satisfied that the teleport link went down and Alyx had already played a vital role in driving Gordon towards this objective; that to me counts as “investment worthwhile”. Everything that happens post fusion detonation is not something Gman ever considered, because he was ready to move onto the new offers he'd received.

Yes of course that's the *real* explanation but that's not how we fanboys roll.

I don't believe that is the "real" explanation, myself. G-man never showed any signs in the game of trying to help her. It's likely he didn't have any specific plans for her anymore, and just shoved Gordon with her to see what happened.

G-man didn't show any interest in keeping her alive until after the hunter attack, and by then it was just to relay a message to Eli, so that Eli would tell Gordon to destroy the Borealis.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that it's beyond our comprehension why he left her for dead at this point, seeing as we have no idea what G-man is trying to accomplish with all this, or even what his real name is.

I don't think we will ever know G-man's real name because just naming him at this point is huh... I don't know.
