What is the G-Man's purpose (possible spoilers)

I think that the G-Man works for an agency which essentially screws with time by using people of that age. Such as Gordon Freeman, I think the G-Man was sent to see if Gordon was all that they heard he was, and decided that Gordon would make a good mercenary. So when Gordon lived to the hype, they decided to "sell" his services to the highest bidder and the Combine didn't make the bid high enough.

I think the agency is really out to make a profit from all of this, possibly in Gold, Oil, hell, maby even water. Think about it, why does Breen tell Gordon that his employer was up to the highest bidder, why would the G-Man just watch Gordon everywhere, why would you see him make deals with the Rebels (the binoculars in an abandoned house when you have the buggy, look at the broken house and you'll see him talking to a rebel)

I think its kind of narrow minded to believe that the G-man is after gold or oil any kind of traditional wealth like that. Honestly if valve doesn’t blow us all away with a, “wow I never thought that this was what he was talking about!” revelation with the G-man then I will be at least somewhat disappointed. Keeping him so enigmatic really raises a high bar for them to surpass our own imaginations. But if any company can do it…. it would be valve.
I guess that what I’m saying is that just because the G-man talks about value, doesn’t mean he is talking about wealth. Lots of things are valuable but not in monetary terms. He is obviously not being direct with us. So when speaks of employers and bids I would wager a bet he doesn’t mean he that the price of Gordon Freeman went up on Wall Street. He is just using that lingo for illustrative purposes because he isn’t allowed explain everything directly to Gordon.

What is the use for gold in a world controled by the Combine. Whatever G-man seeks it is not a monetary reward.
