sierra makes games, vivendi gets them to the consumers and get all the money

Vivendi is a media company. They own Sierra, Blizzard, and other companies. Including Universal video(I think)
Sierra is a game publishing company that publishes other games like Valve's HL2 and Relic's HW2. Although they do develop their owns games I think

Nevermind, thought you posted Vivendi and Valve not Sierra. :|

Sierra is a publisher and is part of VUGames.

Vivendi is a conglomerate headquartered in france i believe. Vivendi Universal Games is a subsidiary of Vivendi and Sierra is in turn a subsidiary of VUGames. Sierra publishes HL2.
An important thing to remember is that HL2 makes up just a tiny tiny bit of Vivendi's huge pie of revenue.
