where do I go for patches?

Steam automatically downloads patches for you. You don't need to do anything.

thats why steam is the future, no more hellishly annoying patches!

The disadvantage, though, is that you can't store all of the patches on a CD to use later on if you need to reinstall.

HL1 ended up having patches that were 150+ megs total if you went from a brand new install. Icky to download if you were on dialup or have limited bandwidth.

But when you reinstall, you don't need to patch, because you download the fully patched version (unless you bought Retail that is...)
