Why preload Half Life 2?

Im not bothered really, but Im buying the game, why start preloading unless your taking orders through steam for it?


Or is this for Ati vouchers only?

Only ATI Voucher people will get the download tonight if you scratched off the cd key and have opted to get through steam. If you want the boxed copy then you will have to wait for your boxed copy, simple as that. They are not going to be downloading this to ANYONE who has not purchased it yet, which at this point since there is no option to buy, then ATI people get it first.

yeah i cant see the point if your buying the game from shops, and why would valve give you the game for free? id say ati and preorders will be the ones preloading

They're not giving the game for free. Even if the files are on your hard-disc, you can play unless you buy it over Steam or put in a CD-Key.

Okay people they are giving you the files, but to unlock the files you need a CD Key, whether you buy it off STEAM, from the store, or with a voucher, IT DOESN'T MATTER YOU CAN STILL PRELOAD. I could be wrong but this is what I have gathered from VALVe info thread and interviews and such. :rolling:

Preloading is just to help spread out the bandwidth and make distributing smoother... plus you'll get it faster when it's finally released.

Also, we should clear up the fact that we don't know whether the preload will be available to everyone or not. We can only guess.

Although I don't see any possible advantage valve would get from letting all-and-sundry preload it...

Ummm, maybe because you have the game the minute its released, when you have CDs you have to wait until its released then install it. Its called PREloading because its before.

I actually meant that I didn't understand why people who were buying HL2 from a retailer were planning to preload and then activate it with their CD keys from the box.

I would rather wait 5 minutes while looking at the pretty installation pictures than tie up my internet connection for hours on end preloading it. I understand that it allows you to play HL2 a few precious seconds earlier, but it seems a waste of time to me.

Sorry I wasn't more clear, I am all in favor of people buying HL2 over steam to get to play it earlier.

I'll be preloading when they start the preload, since I've got an ATI voucher. But I'd preload it even if I didn't have it, just because then I wouldn't have to install HL2 when I get the retail box.

And yeah, i'm still buying the CE, so that I can have hl2 installed on both of the computers in my house, incase a friend comes over And I want the CE, and I want to give Valve some money for this game, I don't want ATI to give them money instead of me. Or well in my case, sapphire.
