Considering how long until completion, isn't it safe to assume that they would be releasing it on the latest version of directx?

Hmm. Direct X 10 is Vista only, and there is no reason to believe that Valve, previously committed to making the game compatible with a wide range of systems, would integrate Direct X 10 features to the point that the game would depend upon them. Whether there will be a rendering mode that uses Direct X 10 features (as there is for Direct X 7, 8 and 9) we don't know. I wouldn't imagine that, despite the improvements made to Source for Episode Two, we'll see anything too drastic in Direct X 10 terms. Well, considering how many of us will have Vista AND a Direct X 10 capable card by summer, that's no surprise.

It's true. Even if Episode 2 doesn't have DX10 gfx, you'll still be able to play it in DX 9 on Vista. I got Vista today (the official launch day) and I've had this 8800GTX for about 2 weeks now. It's nice to se somethings taking and using the power that PCs have now. And I hope Valve takes advantage of it and includes DX 10 water effects and what not. If not in Episode 2, hopefully episode 3.

I don't think Valve will be releasing anything with DirectX10 support anytime soon.

I mean - how many gamers around the world have a GF8800? 2%? I think Valve will release a DirectX10 title when more than 20 or 30% of Steam Hardware Survey entries have a DX10 capable video card.

There is a chance Episode Three will support DirectX10.

ps - by the way, Half-Life 2 and Episode One run very well on Vista. In fact, these games run *better* on Vista than XP, and they're DirectX9!

ps2 - Vista supports DirectX9. Earlier DirectX's are emulated, so older games run a bit slower, but if you have decent hardware, you won't notice any slowdowns (yeah, like 226fps in XP and 102 in Vista - if you can notice that, you are a cyborg! :D)

They have said they will add it. Especially working on QUAD support im sure DX10 will come shortly after that. Or probably with Episode 3.

I think they will. After all, EP2 is releasing in the summer... and I suspect that a big handful of people will have upgraded to Vista (and upgraded their video cards) by then. Vista will have fixed alot of the usual bugs that come with the initial release, and thats probably when most people who plan on upgrading will go ahead and do so. I think Valve knows this, so they are going to support dx10...

I recall gabe saying "eventually", but not for episode 2. 3 maybe.
