Will turrets/superweapons make a comeback? Your hopes and opinions?

Remember the turrets from the original HL games?

I used to love the feeling of power that came from standing behind the big bulletproof shield and taking control of the gun via our little friend, the "Use" key... so much fun, mowing down a whole wave of grunts at a time...

And then there were the bigger prothers of the machinegun turrets... things like the mortar and the bombardment... err... thingy...

Did you enjoy them... and do you think they'll be coming back?

(I wish they had let us use one of those missle turrets like the one Gordy meets in the rail system...)
 
I'd be suprised if they weren't featured at some point. :)

Yeah i loved those too. I really think they're making a comeback because you can see a lighter version of them in the E3 videos. The bugbait vid and the bariade video i think. It would be soo nice if the missile ones made a comeback too.
 
Hmm.. I think there will be some turrets and stuff in HL2.. pie ffs
 
Speaking of turrets, i like the turrets that featured in barricade and bugbait. The thing that amazed me was instead of just falling down silently like if they were in any other game, an alarm went off to indicate that it was unable to operate. That was cool!
 
I'm reallly looking forward to mowing down some combine with a hudge ass turret gun to which they have no chance of fighting back.
 
I dunno... the ones in the Bugbait and Barricade vids are just the normal Autoguns... you couldn't take control of them in the original games...

[EDIT]: Yeah, Murray, and did you notice that they also make one last burst of fire in an attempt to hit whatever knocked them over?

Yeah but then again, wut's the point of putting those in and not the big/normal ones?
Let's just hope they're making a comeback, or else... :hmph:
 
To clarify, I'm asking if people enjoyed, and would like to see the return of, something similar to the controllable machinegun turrets (the ones with the big bulletproof panel on the front) and superweapons like the bombardment console from HL, and the mortars...

The turrets were fun, but not especially exciting. A moving turret would be cool though, like a turret on a train.

As for autoguns, hopefully they'll give us a few autoguns we can place ourselves. If not, then (phrase of the year) someone will mod it in.

Placeable autoguns would be fun... that was one of the few particularly fun parts of Unreal 2...

[EDIT]: Hey, no one should knock the traditional "PIE!" option... :E
 
But you can do ANYTHING at Zombocom... ANYTHING AT ALL!!! The only limit is YOUR SELF!

Back on topic... Since we've seen the Gauss gun mounted on the buggy, do you think that could turn up as a turret this time around? It sort of is on the buggy... a movable turret...

In the Barricade video, I thought it was a car alarm, because he threw a grenade and the turret was right beside a car.
 
In the PCZ preview they mention a "meaty Alien machine gun"(sic) so proply will be.And It was mentioned in the E-mails( i think) of trying to make the Strider Drivable which would be a super weapon.

I know what ya mean though,I'd love to take control of the Citidals walls and demolish an Orphange or City 17's Microsoft offices.
 
That would be cool if when the new Hammer that will come with the SDK had something like that FarCry stuff.. Where you can like edit the terrain and make enemys, and dive right in to play it.
 
At least we know that in HL2 there will be some way to defeat the turrets. I was playing the Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow demo on my comp yesterday, and just got pissed at one turret that I couldn't kill (grenade after grenade, the only thing that changed was the sound and speed of the bullets, and even that changed with where I was standing :P ). I can't wait to knock some turrets on their side :D lol
 
The gauss gun on the buggy is cool, I definately want to use that often. Since turrets inevitably bring on the millions-of-dumb-enemy-hoards mow 'em down style gameplay (of which I'm not a fan), I didn't find the turrets all that exciting. Adding a turret on a train, or a movable turret, or doing cool stuff with placable autoguns is much more appealing to me.

How about a throwable collapsable autogun? You throw it over a wall, it lands, unfolds and rights itself, and targets any enemies it can see.

Sorry to go even more OT, but I hope the laser tripmies come back, and sense true breakage of their beam, not just if a player or npc breaks the beam. That way you could set up tripmines that point at the head of an autogun, so the mine essentially becomes a proximity sensor. When the autogun head moves to center on a target, the mine goes off.

Similarly, I wonder if placing an autogun on a moving platform would mess it up - it sees movement in all directions and just goes nuts shooting at everything.
 
I'd love to see the return of the tripmines...

I think that the autogun's target detection system might be a little more sophisticated than that... if they were real, that is...
 
At some point, every respectable FPS set in the recent past of future has to have some sort of uber-turret that the player gets to control while enemies mindlessly swarm towards you.
 
Heh I love stationary turrets :) I'd hold the fire button down for a few minutes after and shoot the bodies, wall and whatever else was in range :)

And the part that impresses me most about the turrets is that they are physical objects, you can simply push em over!

its wierd imo that Unreal 2 gets knocked so damned much, I considered it great and loved nearly every second of it :D

Does anyone know if the mounted machinguns that you could use in the original games were actually a real design, or did the VALVe team just make them up?
