Will we have to restart Steam?

I am currently in italy, and halflife2 won't be released until 9am local time here. Unfortunately I will be in class. My question is : Will we have to restart steam at the time of release in order to update content as per our normal process of updating steam, or will steam automatically acknowledge the release of hl2 and verify without us having to push a button? thnx :cheers:
