Hi, im really new to using wings 3d and any kind of modeling, but i was wondering how to cut things out of objects. for example how to make a circular cut through a square.

Use the boolean operand (for 3DSMax its in the extended primitives menu). Using it will create a mix between two objects, using the cut method you select (A-B, B-A, A+B, whatever). Just try it out and go back if its the wrong cut :)

I'm pretty positive wings doesn't have Booleans, which is a good and bad thing. Bad cuz some times it makes things easier. Good because alot of times your model will be cleaner because you didn't use boolean operations ;).

Any way, check out 'bridge' face to work around not having booleans. Another one to try is 'intrude'

ah, so wings 3d is a program? I wondered why he wanted to use booleans on a wing, it didnt sound so smart, doh :)

Mini tutorial:

1) Create cube.

2) Select 2 faces opposite each other.

3) Right click and select 'inset'. Make the inset slightly smaller than the face of course ;).

4) Now right click again and hit 'smooth'. Only the inset faces should be selected. Perhaps 'smooth' again depending how round you want the hole to be.

5) Right click and hit 'dissolve'. This makes all the faces on either side become one.

6) Right click and hit 'bridge'.

You now have a circular cut thru the square. :)

It should look like the attached picture.

Yeah it's free too http://www.wings3d.com

People seem to love it or not care about it. It's great for fast intuitive modeling. No roll out nightmares etc hehe.

Thanks a lot. Another question is that how would i carve out a circle out of any object? thanks again, btw, this is my work in progress. my first gun model ever.

Well it's mostly a matter of using the above tutorial and adapting it to whatever your doing. Say you want to make the trigger part of the gun, start it as a cubiod, cut your circle as above, then tweak it in to shape.

You should get the overall shape of your model done before working on details. Say for a gun - start with a cube, scale it and extrude faces to get the basic shape, then add the details. It's a lot easier to cut a hole in something when the model is still basic.

To make the inner part of the barrel, use a inset on the end of the cylinder, then another inset thats just a hair smaller and move the inner inset face down towards the other end. OR select the barrel end face, and hit intrude. The first method is the least wastful way, the second isn't so hot if the barrel is more than just a plain old cylinder.

There's a many many ways of doing things, I'm sure you'll figure out quick what works for you, just keep at it. Hope this stuff helps.
