could someone please tell me if this Gfx card is worth its money!

http://www.pcwcomponentcentre.co.uk/invt/pvt43pnad7

as i have no clue on wot to look for.

at the moment i have a fx5200 128mb, running all medium,1028 x 728 (if thats right) on CS:S, will i see a considerable difference in graphics and performance?

thanks for the help in advance

If you have a 5200, then I guess it's going to be an AGP graphics card. This 6600 you are looking at is a PCI-E card, which means it won't work with your current PC.

The performance of the card is going to be much better than your 5200, but I'm not sure about that price.

So what you need to do is find an AGP 6600 as cheap as possible, and preferably not from PCWorld.

Here is the one I would recommend: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/prod...2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=84725

In the CS:S "best FPS" graph, it shows the 9600 XT as a rounded total of FPS to 43 or something like that for the 1024X resolution. Well, I have that card and I get higher FPS's and I prolly have a crappier machine then they ran it on.

I wouldn't exactly trust this site to close-call comparisions. I mean, of course a X800 is gonna run better than a 5200... but...

Look for a 6600GT instead of a normal 6600 it performs better especially if you can find one for a low price. I currently use an MSI 6600GT and it performs very well (1280x1047 4XAF 70FPS DX9 in HL2) It plays doom3, far cry, Battle for Middle Earth, Call of Duty anything I can throw at it ! I can play all of these at 1280x1047 to 1600x1200 with max settings and they still run smooth. My card overclocks itself by up to 10% from the factory so it is warrantied if you want more performance for free. Benchmarks for the 6600GTs can be found here:

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2277&p=1

It performs up to 2X better then the 9800pro.

Very true. In that pricerange, Nvidia > Ati.

My FPS depends on where you are looking and the map etc. My lowest is 40 and highest 85 (because I have Vsinc on). My settings are 1600x1200, 4xAA 8xAF everything on max + Vsinc. I have a 6800GT.

It's worth checking out a 9800 pro (maybe even pickup a second hand one)

Otherwise try saving for a 6800 or X800 of some flavour.

I personally can't stand a frame rate that drops below 60 - so spent my hard earned cash on a x800x tpe, which I run at 1024*768 (aa/ff and details on max) Not a high res I know, but the rate never drops below 60 - even with 10 guys infront of me shooting like loonies on the most graphically taxing maps :)

(gun fights look so much better when everything is silky smooth)

Hmm thats odd, i get 95 FPS with my 9800 Pro on Stress test
And get 80 const!
5.1 Omega drivers.

I can play at 15 FPS easily. I am usually not bothered by framerate. Go for the 9800 Pro. It's an amazing card for the price.

Even 140+ in the stress test means that your frame rate will drop into low 60's high 50's in heavy fights. (the pc hasn't been made that can run cs:s on all maps, with loads of ppl, uber details, and maintain a constant 80 fps ;))

Once you start dropping into the 40's it effects your aim. 30 and under and there's very much a ceiling on how good you can get.

Just search for alot of benchmarks and compare the 6600GT to the 9800 pro. You will find that the 6600GT wins. And it's not strange, because the 9800 is "old" and the 6600 is "new".
