I was outside Skingrad on the side near the stables and when I turned right off the road and tried to go into a little valley I encountered an invisible wall and the words "You cannot go here. Please turn back." I'm confused... Was it because I had an active quest in Skingrad at the time or something?

Did same thing to me, sadly, it is the edge of the map. Oblivion isn't as big as I thought, seems smaller than Morrowind?

But I looked on my map and I wasn't near the edge.

Morrowind's world was approximately 10 square miles, but around 4 of square miles were the surrounding ocean and neighboring small islands. Oblivion has about 16 square miles, and has much less water. It probably feels smaller because of the fast travel option.
