This program is confusing as hell, but that is probably because this is my first go at 3d modelling. Where do I even start? What should I learn? I have been fiddling around with it and want to make a silencer, but every time I render it there is a little thing on it that says mental ray softimage|xsi... that is real annoying... another thing i dont know how to do is move the 3d model around... where are some tutorials that just go over the basic controls on xsi?

I dont have EXp for HL2 yet but in normal EXP there is a tutorial link in the web-browser popup thingy at the start.

well i have been finding some tutorials and such, and am starting to get the hang of the program... my only problem now is everytime is save i get some error and it crashes... any ideas on why?

Dude, go to softimage.com and click softimage xsi/exp for halflife 2 tutorials. You gotta follow every step or else you won't even get the basic concepts.

well, after a night of working in xsi, i made a duck using subdivision surfaces and have learned A TON from just fiddling around with things and following tutorials from edharriss.com .... i can move around in the work environment great and am really starting to get a hang of the program.. now its time to start trying to make some guns.. oh and how do i take a screenshot of my rendered model and then put it on here so you all can see it?

Buy Ed's video's, their worth every penny, the guy knows his stuff when it comes to XSI.

There, promise I wont do another sales pitch for the rest of the day ;)

i will save up for it... im going to learn how to do this and so i am willing to invest time and money into it as i have decided that i want to work in the games industry... :)

EDIT: Which video should I buy?

Not ragging on XSI's tutorials... but their about as good as watching a video on 3ds max for moddeling. No, really... They have a warning at the top of them saying that all the information in them might not be correct becuase it was for a older version and it really doesnt show you how to do anything... Guys if i find any! tutorials worth a darn for xsi ill post them.

I'd buy all his video's, starting with the ones you need the most help with.

i only see 3 on his site.. the thing is that im using the xsi exp for hl2 and im not sure if i can do all the things that he has in the videos in the exp of xsi... it would be a waste to buy a video and not be able to do anything i learn from it because of some random restriction in xsi exp..

email him and ask if they are of use to you as a EXP HL2 user. He's a nice enough chap.

If you want the basics, try the DVDs on Softimage.com

http://www.softimage.com/store

For modders I recomend the modelling one.

If you want to remove the mental ray watermark you need to buy. Prices start at $175 for full software (no limitations and v4) for 1 year students.

Sorry for the blurb...

fair enough, but ive seen Max 6, Student version, 2 Years, for only £90, a better deal in my eyes, seeing as its supposed to have a bigger community and is generally used more.

PS. that has nothing to do with the thread, and also, that 'water-mark' of Mental Ray in your renders, is a form of advertising, and surely its kind of obvious that you cant get rid of it, otherwise they'd not have it at all. who wants a big water mark ruining their model ?

If you really want to go for it, get a permanent XSI student license for $275. As to the 'is generally used more...' I'd be careful with statements like that. More people drive a Lada than a Porsche, but given the choice...

the water mark is not advertising, its to prevent the free version from being used in production. If you don't want the water mark running through the render (not the model anyhow) all you have to do is buy the student version.
